Hi,

I am doing the Seagull Century this year. Is anyone else planning on riding?

Did that last year. Don't know about this year as it coincides with my daughter's 7th birthday. Last year there were a couple of thousands who took part, so you will have lots of company.

Thanks, This will be my 3rd. I did the last one about 10 years ago.

I'm not sure I'll be ready for the big ride, but I might do one of the shorter ones.

I'm toying with the idea of riding this event. I went to the college and drove around some of the route while vacationing in Chincoteague a couple years ago. Nice, flat and scenic. I've heard many good things about the event itself and, it supposedly has one of the largest turnouts on the East Coast with regards to biking events. And at this time, Oct. 9 is a good date.

2 weeks out anyone riding?

I'm registering tomorrow. Looking forward to it, but it sounds like it could be a little bit of a mess. With that many people, there are probably a good number of blockheads without good bike handling skills. I'm looking forward to it none the less.

You are right but it will be ok. Have you found a place to stay?

I'll be there! It was the first century ride I ever did (2003) and the fastest to date (4:58 in 2007, my only sub 5 hour century). I won't be setting speed records this year, but it'll be fun, as it always is.

Blockheads
 

The blockheads are what makes it fun! Seriously, there are some of those but I've never had any serious problems. The main thing to worry about is the weather.

I'm doing 100 miles instead 100km this year. Good event. tons of people. beer garden after. Plus it is 20 minutes from home. chuckb, under 5 hours... nice. wish I had that pace. Im shooting for under 7 hours, ride time. I plan on taking breaks. Weather looks good. The man is saying 0% chance of precip. high of 72 with nnw 10mph wind. Now if i could just remember where i put my registration packet.

Von where are you located I grew up in OC.

My nine year-old daughter and I will be there on the tandem. Last year was her first century. Really looking forward to the ride!

Is anyone considering doing the new Snow Hill route? I guess this is a new century route that they're debuting this year to spread people out more. I'll probably stick to the traditional Assateague route, but I'm not completely decided.

We're on the fence. I'd just assume do the new route but the stoker wants to do Assateague so we can hopefully see ponies. We'll figure it out Friday night....

Call me old fashion but I am doing the traditional route. It goes along many roads I biked along growing up so there is a bit of nostalgia for me. If any of you guys are there on Sunday there is a ride to the Bordeleau winery. It is owned by a friend of mine from high school and the wine is very good. It would be worth your while to stop by.

We will be there. Been doing Seagull since 1990 - its second year. Have missed maybe 5 times in 20 years. Pregnancy, knee issues...but rode in the nastiest of weather days. If we're signed up we're going. Bring money - the expo is great. We always pick up good deals down here. My husband is usually on a tandem with our son but Seagull is our yearly honeymoon ;-) even though we never even ride together.

Not riding it, never have. For some reason, the idea of a nearly-flat century isn't overly compelling.

Instead, I'll be riding a Potomac Pedalers ride out of Brandywine, WV: Blue Grass Byways. It's 99.6 miles with 7,600' and change of climbing. The route covers, in reverse, five of the big climbs used in the Mountain Mama Road Bike Challenge. Given the foliage that has started to show its colors in the WV hill country, it should be a beautiful ride.

For those who ride the Sea Gull, let's hear the reports! I hope that at least some of the BikeForums crew tries out the new route (and hopefully gets some good data for it re: climbing) and reports back to the forum.

Two friends & I did the Assateague Route. It was a great ride & a great day! 101 miles, 17.5 mph avg, 5 hours 43 minutes. First time I have done a century under 6 hours. SU & the SG org did a terrific job of organizing this ride. It'll be interesting to see the final rider count. Maybe more than 10,000 this year?
