Gainesville, FL (UF) scene -- shops, etc?

My sister just moved to Gainesville, and I'm wondering where she could find good bike stuff.

I started thinking about it when she said that her pump isn't fitting the Dunlop valve on her bike (can't remember how she ended up with it, but she's been in Germany for about four years), and she asked if I could help get it all sorted out (not just the valve, but the bike in general) when I visit next week.

Gator Cycle has really good mechanics that have all been at the shop for a LONG time. If your looking for some used parts Spin Cycle has a bunch of milk crates full of parts they usually let you look through. And if your looking for a nice trail to ride Gainesville Hawthorne trail is the ticket..... paved...

Primo Bicycle Works is another good shop that's been around for a very long time and is close to campus. Don't know if they're still good as it's been about 20 years since I used to use them. They have a second shop out on 16th Blvd, a little further away from campus.

She's picked out a shop that's basically between her house and campus -- Mr. Goodbike. One of the guys there appears to be a full time utility/commuter cyclist, doing his shopping and everything by bike, so his knowledge is just what she needs. She and I stopped by there while I visited last week, and I got her a new helmet, chain lock, and two-legged kickstand.

Also, rather than selling her new tubes right away, they sold us a Presta-Schrader adapter that made her bike's Dunlop valves usable with the Serfas smarthead pump she bought from them earlier. That way, she can keep those still-good tubes in the tires (they're Marathon Plus, too, so they should be good for a while) and can hold off on spending more for Schrader tubes.

zzOtherlandzz I soured on Gator Cycle after they refused to sell me a tool on the grounds that selling tools undercuts their repair business. Sheesh. If I'm buying tools, then maybe I'm not gonna take my bike to the shop for repair/maint anyhow?!?!

garilla Unfortunately Primo has been defunct for more years than I can remember. One of the movers and shakers, Doug Hill, was struck and killed by a motorist. And another longstanding fixture, The Bike Route, just closed up last month. One bright new star on the horizon is (get this name ) Gainesville's Super Cool Bike Shop, just west of 34th on University. I've been pretty happy with them.

[QUOTE=BarracksSi;11409385]My sister just moved to Gainesville, and I'm wondering where she could find good bike stuff./QUOTE]

Another good shop in town is Bikes & More, on 6th Street just south of 23rd Avenue. My old buddy Chandler, who's been one of the movers and shakers on the local scene for longer than I've lived here) works there. He's a veritable fount of wisdom on bicycling in Gainesville.

And have your sister check the Gainesville Cycling Club's website - https://www.gccfla.org - for groups, ride times, links to the state bike calendar, etc etc.

I just noticed you're from the DC area. I grew up in the MD 'burbs and used to ride all over Silver Spring, Beltsville, Burtonsville, etc.

I just bought my bike from Schwinn Shop, and the guy there, Dave, is real great. If anyone wants to see my review on the shop, just go to Yelp and find reviews under "Schwinn Shop."

I also like Mr. Goodbike, but basically the other places in town kind of intimidate me.

Sorry to hear about Doug. I wasn't sure about Primo, when you google stuff on the internet, sometimes you're getting old data, obviously I was.

I saw the Super Cool Bike Shop while at the homebrew shop next door a few weeks ago.

I have to shill for Bikes & More because they are a major sponsor of my race team. They do have very good wrenches working there.

Mr. Goodbike is also on my "good" list. I've only been in the store a couple of times, but it was always a very good vibe.

I miss Doug. He was a great guy, sold me and my kids a number of bikes, and was a neighbour. Very tragic and that happened a long time ago.
