I did the 70 mile route of the 2010 Horrible Hundred this weekend, wondering if others here have done it too? They said there would be 3000 wheels, surely some of them are on here as well.

To say that it was hard is a huge understatement. I live in south FLA and have no hills practice short of overpasses, I burnt out my legs 50 miles in, right at the foot of Sugarloaf Mountain, which I had to get off the bike on. Last 19 miles were pretty much limp mode, but I made it! Next year, better training, better pacing, better gearing (I have a standard with a 12-26, not what you want apparently! ). I'm also preparing a 2-part writeup documenting my experience, hope to have the first part ready tonight.

I would love to hear from the others who were there, if you did the 35, 70 or 100 miles. Hope you all had a great time in the hills of Florida!

First of all congratulations on attempting the HH. I would suggest a 28 on the back would have helped a great deal with a 39 on the front. Will you be posting your writeup on this forum. I look forward to reading them.

Did the 35, more difficult than I was prepared for. Planned on doing the 70 but my buddy was having difficulty and we cut it short. I too need more training and better gearing. I sure would have loved to have a triple Sunday. Probably losing 50 lbs would be more help. In spite of all that it sure was fun.

Heard many great stories about SugarLoaf Hill at Clermont so I went up there and did the 8:15am 70 miler start. Next year, hope to do the 100mile route.
Took off hard and caught up with alot of the 100miler riders.
Never got passed by anyone the whole 70mile distance and i am still weak from that effort.
I too wish I had a lower gear or had gears on my bike.
That 48-13 geared singlespeed almost made my heart explode!

I am not buying the 48/13 story either. Although he doesn't say he road up SL, just that he wishes he had lower gears.

I am not joking!
I really did do the whole 70 miler loop without having to dismount on any climb that day. Cant believe no one believes me. I do ocasionally show up at the San Antonio 8:00am Sunday morning on the same bike but i used a 48-12 there. The hills are not as long or as steep in my opinion as Clermont was. I am glad i went 1 cog larger (13T).
I no longer have a single speed road bike. I have gone fixed gear for now on with 48-13.
Will show up at San Antonio not this Sunday but the following Sunday.
Hate verticle drop outs always trying to keep the chain tention is a drag! That is why i went fixed gear with a horizontal drop out frame with a slight weight penalty.
Hope the fellow roadies dont mind me riding with them. Hope to ride with ya all soon.

Hey guys, quick update, I took a spill 2 weekends ago so the writing of the second installment was put on hold. And now I feel too much time has elapsed, plus if I were to write it would probably be about the spill. Went to the ER but didn't break anything, and was back riding 2 weeks later.

mastre, sorry to hear about your spill but glad you are OK. I was looking forward to the second installment however. Perhaps next year.
