Moving to NC

I'm planning to move sometime after January and i will be living in Charlotte,Nc. I know there are a decent amount of bike shops in the area but i was wondering what the roadbiking is like? I commute, long distance, and race. How are roads, drivers, ect? Also, how far away from Charlotte would i be driving to do sanctioned race events?

Hey Bikemech.

I am actually from FLA and raced down here for a long time. One site from which you can start to get some other links that will eventually get you to sanctioned events to give you an idea of the Charlotte racing scene and in surrounding areas) is the Freewheelers of Spartanburg. If is a big club out of Spartanburg South Carolina that handles the annual Assaults on Mount Mitchell and Marion(great rides if you like long distance and lots of climbing!).

There are tons of either non-sanctioned or formerly sanctioned metric and true centuries in the mountains of Western North Carolina. Also, under Southeast here titled How would you rank mountain centuries in the SE?---- compares difficulty of a number of them and from there you can track down their websites on google.

I ride southwestern Union Co. south of Charlotte and I think my area is great. Lots if cyclist on the road especially on the weekends all around Waxhaw and there are many groups that ride the same area. I ride from home with my son and occasionally some friends but the roads are mostly decent with nice rolling terrain. Not much in the way of serious hills but there are some around Waxhaw that many folks like to train on like Rehobeth Rd coming up out of Waxhaw to the south. Drivers in the area are mostly aware of cyclist but some need to pay more attention, but isn't that the norm anywhere?

Overall I think it is a wonderful area for road cyclist and mountain biking.

There are a lot of good riding once you get out of the city limits. Most of the bike shops have rides leaving from them on the weekends. I live in cabarrus county which is nice to ride. If you have any questions riding or bike shops you can pm me. Queen City Bicycles is great they just built up a bike for me and did a great job.

I lived north of Charlotte in Rowan County. The roads for me up there were fantastic.

Boy, I miss that place.

I have lived in Charlotte for 23 years now and love the road rides. There are many place in Charlotte to ride like in the University area, Mooresville, Davidson, and downtown. We have the 24 hours of Booty coming up in September. There are alos many mountain bike trails too ride also, the Whitewater Center, North Meck, Beatty, Fisher Farm, Renni, etc. You will love it!
