Planning a trip from Georgia Tech to UGA

So this is a loooooooooooong way off, but eventually I'd like to make a trip from my school (GT) to my friend's (UGA) and back by bike. I'll be riding with a buddy.

Google Maps puts it at roughly 70 miles one-way. So for a there-and-back I figure I'll either do it all in one day with a lunch break in the middle or spend the night and split it up between Sat/Sun.

My question concerns the amount of time spent on the road and the danger due to it. I generally like to stick to paved bike trails (PATH foundation) or quiet little suburbs, and this would be getting me out onto busy roads.

There aren't many bike trails between these two locations, and I don't know the area in between very well. I'll take the Stone Mountain/Freedom path about 15 miles, and then Google Maps has me following Lawrenceville Hwy and Atlanta Hwy for most of the rest of the way using the bike directions. Using Streetview, these roads look a little too busy for my liking though, so I may zig-zag along the back roads next to the highways instead.

Has anyone biked in this region and have any advice? Other thoughts?

Check out the Southern Bicycle League website. Many folks on there have done a similar ride and may be able to give you some ideas.
