Anyone commute to Norfolk Navy Base by bike?

Anyone commute to Norfolk Navy Base by bike?
This is my first time in the regional discussions section of BF. I wanted to get some insight into commuting by bike in the Norfolk, VA area. I'll be stationed there within the next year and I don't see anything bike friendly about commuting to NOB.
Not only is the main artery onto base a highway, but there are no bike lanes and everyone I have spoken with says I have a death wish if I tried to commute by bike.
Anyone down in that area commute to base? What routes do you take? Pointers for the area?

One of my buddies, stationed there some years ago, used to commute in around 15 miles. He isn't on the net, but if you still want suggestions let me know and I can ask him about it.

I used to commute from Va. Beach to the Navy Base in '79-'80. I know it's a bit different now, but I remember that I used the Bay Ave Gate.

Thanks for the replys!! My orders worked out so I am at another base in the area and it is VERY bike friendly getting to and from work.
