In Blacksburg VA for three weeks
 

I'll be singing at the Vocal Arts and Music Festival in Blacksburg from June 2nd till 22nd, staying on the Virginia Tech campus. I don't know how much downtime I'll have, but I know I'll go crazy if I don't do any riding at all.

Any suggestions? Where should I ride? I found these: http://www.cycling.org.vt.edu/?page_id=11 Any nice shops or co-ops or ride groups to meet? Should I bring the roadie or the MTB? (Are there even any easy XC trails near enough to the campus to make that worthwhile? I won't have a car and don't think I'll have enough downtime for long rides.)

I'm not a local, but I'm in town for the Mountains of Misery ride yesterday. Check out the East Coasters bike shop on N. Main Street. They hosted the registration for the event, and there were tons of riders wearing their jerseys at the ride. I bet somebody there would be glad to point out some great routes. Lots of wonderful riding in that area, but mostly pretty hilly.

I echo what Jim said. East Coasters is an active shop and they know many good routes and can tell you about group rides too. But that Mountain Lake route on your linked site looks sweet.

Hijack! You mean the 100 mile ride? Try to do it! It would be great to meet up, if you don't mind leaving me in the dust on the ride :)

I am from Blacksburd and there is a nice trail from the duckpond back through the farm country and into some neighborhoods were you can then jump on prices fork and head out into the country. Find the 7 eleven, turn right, go to the end of that road and turn left. It is a beautiful mountainous ride out through the country. It will be long, it takes 45 minutes by car but well worth it.
