The roads immediately north of Silver Beach are an option but I have not ridden them. Chincoteague Island offers some nice cycling roads and areas and its only up the road apiece. I would not call it a "training ground" by any means, but you can get a good amount of exercise while enjoying the landscape and scenery in and around the wildlife preserve. And the local restaurants there serve fresh fish and often plenty of it. On up the road around Pocomoke City, some of the roads are designated bike routes. And further on is Salisbury, the host city for the Seagull Century. You can take a look at the routes on their website. Most of these roads have healthy shoulders they are easy to cycle on. Heat will be your enemy. Salisbury probably has organized group rides since its a college town but I have not looked into it. Salisbury to Assateague Island is a really nice ride.

I ride on The eastern shore often. I stay on the back roads. you can expect narrow chip sealed roads with light traffic. The nice thing is you have a hard time getting lost, sooner or later you run into the Bay, the Ocean or Rte 13. Most convience stores, restaurants etc..are along 13 or in the larger towns, so plan accordingly. At one time a nice Chamber of Commerace map was availble at most local merdhants. There will be a couple of tall ships at Cape Charles on the 15th and 16th.
