Accident - 9-10-2015 10:30am PDT - Newport Beach

Was riding today and as I approached the hill to the Back Bay there was a cyclist down literally in the middle of the large intersection at Jamboree and University. This is a huge intersection with a tremendous amount of traffic.

The cyclist was down hard. Unresponsive, in full road kit. There was another cyclist that was obviously with him/her as they has the same kit. There was an older gentleman on a cell phone with a Lexus SUV stopped in the middle of the intersection with its hazard lights on.

I stopped and looked for all of about 30 seconds before I saw a fire/rescue vehicle arriving on scene. I did see the victim's foot move slightly which made me think he/she had lost consciousness and was waking up.

I have no idea about what happened. I probably arrived on scene less than a minute or two after it happened and 20 minutes later on my return leg there wasn't any backup or clue that something had gone wrong earlier.

I do hope the rider is ok. Be careful out there. It sure made me think the entire rest of my ride.

Well the HB collision sounds like it was a poor decision by the cyclist, not that we know any of the specifics.

I hope the Newport rider makes it.

I used to ride Jamboree and related streets on my way to the beach when I live in OC.
I wouldn't do it today. Speed limit is 55 meaning cars going 70 on that street.
All those 6 lane wide streets around there are like mini freeways.

I suspect the rider was likely crossing Jamboree riding on University towards or away from Back Bay. A very popular route one many take, including myself. I feel its safe.

Just a caution to my roadie friends: I am back to riding but am limited right now to the road. Yesterday I was riding, approaching the intersection of the 5 freeway on Sand Canyon when the light turned red so I stopped (I was going very slow anyway). At the same moment, I was brushed; almost hit, by a roadie who instead of stopping or slowing, sped up to beat the light. I thank the good Lord that no one was coming off the freeway at that moment as he crossed on the red. I am also glad he did not hit me; after spending 5 months off the bike, if he caused me further injury - I would kill him!

Anyway I pray the rider above is not seriously injured. Just always hate to hear of someone getting hurt!

I am curious, why was it a poor decision? Because she chose to ride at that time of the day?

From the article "The woman, a resident of Long Beach, was crossing the southbound lanes on Pacific Coast Highway, just south of Seapoint Street, around 4:40 a.m. when a man driving the same direction in a tan 1994 Honda Accord struck her, Huntington Beach police Officer Jennifer Marlatt said."

Does this mean she was crossing PCH?

Crossing PCH in the dead of night on a bicycle? In front of a car that probably can't see her? The article doesn't say AT seapoint street, it says south of seapoint street. There really aren't a lot of good places to cross PCH except at intersection. I obviously don't know the specifics but it doesn't sound like the best idea given the information in the article.

Going southbound on PCH is uphill and the top is Seapoint. Cars drive fast between Warner and Seapoint.

South of Seapoint which means- depending on where, the car may have been cresting the hill (in the dark) while she was crossing PCH. Bad combination it seems.

Ok, her name Nadia Silva, age 31. Riding in the median. Take a look at her bike. Does it appear to have any kind of lights?

HUNTINGTON BEACH: Nadia Silva Killed In Car Accident While Riding Bicycle on Pacific Coast Highway by Seapoint Street | The Seegmiller Law Firm

If she was going southbound from PCH, maybe she wanted to turn into Seapoint and got in the median area either to make a U turn or go on Seapoint. Judging from the kind of bike she was riding, the bike speed could not have been very fast going uphill. Why she went onto the median is a puzzle.

It could have been one of her routine rides.

Here's the Long Beach Press telegram article which adds a bit more detail to the location: between Seapoint and Golden West and in the median.

Ohh wow I hope the rider in NB is ok. That's a 2 min ride from work for me and I take that route to ride back bay after work. Jamboree is a really busy street, but I never worried unlike PCH that I avoid at all costs now.

I've personally been hit on PCH and had my bike totaled. Fortunately just bumps and bruises for me - along with a lifetime fear of riding PCH ever again.

Isn't that a file photo? The link you provided appears to be to an ambulance-chaser lawyer's site; it says "file photo" in the caption. Not her bike. The second article you linked explains:

Regardless, I hope the rider described in the OP recovers. It seems many accidents like that do not get any media coverage. About three years ago I took the photo below; I don't recall this incident getting any press. It was taken on the 800 block of Bayside just a bit southeast from Harbor Island Drive in NPB. I think someone told me the rider was an LEO; he was in some kind of sheriff's kit or something like that.

Edit: I stand corrected; the incident on Bayside did get press coverage.

I went through the HB site today and did not find any evidence of where the crash took place. There were light skid marks near the first parking log heading south and then another set a bit darker near the next parking lot. Kind of eerie how there was no evidence, I guess with a car and bike there's not much debris like a couple of cars.

I live in CDM and have biked to and from Balboa Island and the Back Bay Trail. The areas that make me most nervous and extra cautious are Bayside street and any part of PCH. I've had two close calls, including one at an intersection near my house. I definitely prefer to drive over to Back Bay with my bike versus riding over there.

Reading this forum and not knowing OC, most people would think SART and PCH are the worst streets to ride. They are probably the 2 safest routes to take in all OC. People must learn how to ride defensive and do not take unnecessary risks.

I saw a cyclist cross over 3 lanes on Newport Coast to take a left turn at Pelican Hill when cars are flying down over 60mph. Why take that risk when you can stop on the right and use the cross walk button??

I pretty much ride around Back Bay at least once a week (just did it last night and on Sunday), day and night. It's beautiful... a gem of Orange County. If you smelled something funky; that would be the ocean... it gets that way sometimes but otherwise its a beautiful route, one heavily used by cyclist and walkers/runners (especially if you know the route around Back Bay). I consider it one of the advantages of living near the coast and I guess I get alittle defensive when someone says something bad about it... but then again; think bad thoughts; I would prefer less traffic anyway!

PS been asking around about the rider near Back Bay... I am hoping no news is good news...
