Join me on a ride from Huntington Beach to the Mexico Border

Hey SoCal peeps,

Next Saturday (9/19) I'm planning to ride from W. Huntington Beach/Sunset Beach to the Mexico border. It's around 117 miles, then another 15 or so back to San Diego to the Amtrak station.

Border Run1 - A bike ride in Huntington Beach, CA

Plan to leave 4am-ish to give me plenty of time, then up to an hour at the border exploring (if there's anything to explore!). At the very least take a few photos, ride along the fence and dip a toe into the ocean (Friendship Park closes by 2pm- probably be too late for that). Accuweather temps at this point predict 80F for Saturday in San Diego.

Edit: Return from the border I think I'm going to head up Coronado peninsula and take the ferry across to downtown, hopefully time-wise it'll work out and not jeopardize my train time. Be a nice change of scenery.

I ride a SS beach cruiser, overall rolling avg. in the 13/14's with flat or drafting speeds of 17-19 mph and have been riding at least one 200km ride per month since April. Torrey Pines will be slow-ish but not a problem.

Train leaves San Diego at 6:45 pm arriving 8:50 pm to the Anaheim Station and I have yet to decide on whether to ride back to WHB from the train station (about 14 miles) or have my wife pick me/us up. TBD

Nothing is set is stone, I'm generally flexible, just want to ride to the border. Anyone interested is also welcome to join anywhere along the route.

Any takers?

Have fun! Ive done Pasadena to Carlsbad, about 105 miles. You doing that ride on a SS? Good luck. A lot of little rollers especially in Laguna Hills and Torrey Pines. you should be fine though. I would love to join but have a wedding to go to.

Thanks r8dr_rider, yes ss cruiser, love that bike. Going to be fun, been through all areas several times so basically I know what I'm in for and have been doing the mileage since April so barring any freak breakdown, should be OK.

If you're like me, I'm sure you'd rather be riding than going to the wedding!

Hope you had fun. I'm looking for a Baja partner, although I am only riding 60 miles per trip right now.
