Ghost Bike on Warner Ave. near PCH in HB

Wow, just passed a white ghost bike on the eastbound lane about a half mile from PCH, I go through this area a ton and hadn't heard anything. Anyone heard anything? I Googled but unless I missed it I didn't see anything. When I went by I didn't see any information on the bike like they usually have.

There was also one about two weeks ago (midweek before Labor Day weekend) on Edinger between Springdale and Edwards. I got stuck in the traffic jam crawling by it. It was a red framed RANS-style recumbent lying in the middle of the street, but I didn't see the RANS logo on it. Didn't see any info in the news on it either (online or in print), but at least no 'white bike' has popped up on a nearby utility pole.

Oh that bike? It belongs to one of the WoodbridgePacific/Brightwater HoA flunkies. They are trying to use it as a bait-bike and nail a Roadie for trying to mess with it.

I'm confused, bait bike for what? How would a Roadie mess with it? Are they trying to get someone to steal it? Who'd steal a bike that looks like a ghost bike? LOL

FWIW: Went surfing yesterday morning in Sunset Beach and stopped to take a picture of the bike. Just an inexpensive bike being used for the symbolism. Even without the white paint job its not worth stealing. HB usually leaves them for 1-2 months before removing them.

Here is a similar ghost bike in Newport Beach from 2012, with a similar lock (painted).
https://bikenewportri.org/wp-content/...9/IMG_3950.jpg

Why is this bike here when no riders have been killed or injured here?

Take a look at the location: border of Bolsa Chica wetlands going east towards the Brightwater subdivision.
Its also close to the entrance to the `Glass Wall` overlook trail that runs along the expensive homes which overlook the Wetlands.
Its right across the street from HH Bay & Racquet club.

This is a politically hot area where many (4+) industrial size glass spills have appeared.

Not doubting you, but where exactly is/was that white bike in Newport Beach? There's an Elliot Kaminitz that was killed on a bicycle in Newport, Rhode Island, but none that I know of in Newport Beach, CA. And the houses in the background look nothing like those I know of in Newport Beach.

And glass spills? Its a geologically 'hot' area with lots of methane creating soils underneath it (peat mixed with sand and clays) that 'burps' once in a while, but no big glass operations.

^^ I didn't mention, but your photo of the locked bike helped to pin down its location (across from the Bay & Racquet Club). Your photo also suggests that this bike fits the `ghost bike` meme, but I can't say it is truly a `ghost bike` memorial.

Glass reference
---------
When I was recovering from a broken femur 2 years ago, I rode in this area 3x/week, usually 2 laps around the Wetlands, so at least twice per day by this location. In the fall of 2013, I started noticing large spills of glass in the shoulder/bike lanes. In 6 months I counted at least 5. These are huge spills, each one the equivalent of a full 55 gallon can of crushed bottle glass spread out over 60 feet or more.

Never did I see any reports of this in forums or media, though some of the local club riders acknowledged the problem. One club sent out a cleanup crew at least once, near the Wetlands parking lot entrance, across from the State Beach.

This many glass spills seems over-the-top to me and points to an organized militant group that is willing to vandalize and damage property for some goal. I hope the bike is a bona-fide `ghost bike` put there by mistake, and not another stunt by the same group doing the glass spills.

Possible Threat
--------
Does anyone feel that such a bike might be a veiled threat against riders? This has occurred to me and I'm trying to rule out the possibility.

P.S.
If you see the pattern to ghost bike memorials in our area, I notice these bike setups:
- bare rims with no tires
- no cranksets, nor chain
- no brifters or brakes on the handlebars
etc
so besides the paint job and the way its locked to a sign along the highway, its not the usual pattern found here.

Is there a database for these deaths? There are quite a number of people who have been killed on that road, maybe it didn't exactly happen in that very spot..........

The glass (and other debris) may have been from that 'endless' sewer line rehabilitation project that went through there. The original contractor walked off the job, then the City and County sewer agency had to re-bid the project, then [. . . more delays . . . ] and that screwed up Warner and the Warner/PCH intersection for a few years. Add to that the road was really constricted at times to where there was only one lane for both vehicles and bicycles, and there was a lot of construction material, equipment, and debris, so its not surprising if someone did get killed in that area. That's all over now (thankfully!!) so it should be safe to ride through there, especially eastbound where Warner borders the wetlands.
