trivia: anyone know the socal cycling connection to Ky Derby?

Trivia Question:

if you've ridden PCH through HB & Sunset Beach, you may know the answer.

There is at least one connection between local cycling & the Ky Derby (big horse race on May 7).

There is another SoCal connection, but cycling is not involved. Bonus points for at least one of the answers to this trivia.

Sorry if this seems like a riddle. I don't want to give too much away.

Um, they actually have a bigger chance of damage from a big earthquake than we do if the SA Fault goes? No really, I read it in the news today.

Earthquakes are shaking the area six times larger than San Andreas: Earthquake in Kentucky is just the first in upcoming series of earthquakes | Mirrorspectrum

@TH - fascinating, unexpected answer that I hadn't heard of. Thanks for the link.

There are 2 ways to approach my trivia question.
1) look at all 22 riders in the Kentucky Derby, their owners, and their silks.

(not a gambling site): https://tinyurl.com/j4qra25
or
2) think about the rider kits you've seen along PCH off Bolsa Chica beach & Sunset Beach.

There is a nexus between both.

@rm
thanks for the cool buttons showing the silks.

Mohaymen is not the one. He is an east coast horse. The owner has to connect to cycling somehow.

Julie Gilbert's father went to USC. You can tell she didn't because no self respecting Trojan would name their horse Trojan Nation.

I'm not sure about any cycling connection though. none of the silks look familiar to me but I'm not a cool beach city dweller either.

The race goes off around 4 PM today. Here is my tri wheel:

if I mention a wheel, does it count as cycling content? After the race I reveal the derby trivia in the subject.

The connection to SoCal cycling and Sunset Beach is via the owner of Nyquist, Mr Reddam. He made a 2nd fortune running CashCall, a Consumer loan originator.

Only today did his Jockey, Mario G., wear britches without the CashCall logo, opting to wear the BreathRight banner instead.

If you've ridden PCH through the Bolsa Chica area you will have seen members of the CashCall Cycling team in pairs or in a team peloton with a Sag vehicle. So, Mr Reddam sponsors a local Cycling team that competes in Pro Races.

During the NBC coverage of the Derby they showed Reddam meeting in his SoCal office with Mario & Doug.

The tri-wheel I showed above was a winner, but what a poor bet (even money payout). Only an aggressive bettor, going almost ice-cold, could have made a good return on this race. Maybe going 1x2x2 with the favorites.

Betting 2x5x4 was way too conservative. This is how to win some money, but come out like a dog.
