Elysian Park 2 cyclists shot

Police hunt two men in shooting of bicyclists in Elysian Park - LA Times

Ploice are searching for two young men who confronted and shot two bicyclists in Elysian Park late Friday.

Authorities believe the two shooters were gang members, both 16 years old — although one may be older.

The pair confronted the two cyclists, a 27-year-old man and his 47-year-old father-in-law, then shot them, said Los Angeles police Sgt. David Armas. Their injuries were not life-threatening.

“The victims had no gang affiliation,” Armas said. “They live locally and were just out for a bike ride.”

Sad, scary, and hits close to home. I hope they're OK.

Last night, there was a family movie screening at the Spoke Bicycle Cafe very close to that spot on the trail. We left the event early and went north. The shooting happened south of the cafe. I'm wondering if the victims were attending the same event.

Are river trails dangerous? They're in the middle of nowhere. Nobody hears you, sees you, knows you.

I would not ride any river trail north of the 55 freeway at night unless in a large group

OK, Garfield is a little sensitive to the issue, and justifiably so, but I ride on the SGRT at night ALL THE TIME. Roughly, Whittier blvd to somewhere north of I10 and back, usually 3 times a week and now that the sun is going down earlier, it's at night every time. Not one issue, ever. I used to ride the upper part of lower SART at night (night is 8 pm for me, not 3 am) and again, never had a single problem, ever.

My car was broken into in my driveway a few years ago. I live on an isolated street, only one entrance / exit. Which is more dangerous?

Regardless, wtf is wrong with people? Shooting strangers on bikes for no apparent reason?

Probably some kind of gang initiation.
I stay away from Elysian Park area. Also down town area.
As far as SGRT being safe.... looks safe .. no trouble.. except for one time..... the time you are there.

I live in the hills just above where this happened. I would not ride that stretch of the bike trail at night.

WTF, this is crazy. I've never had a problem but it's generally unsettling in some areas. Did the LA River ride century a few years ago and some young lady was shot by something, pellet gun perhaps, on the LART north of Imperial Hwy, left a big welt on her leg. So stuff does happen.

Garfield, what happened to you?
