GMR/GRR anyone ride them lately?

Was thinking of taking a road trip and taking in GMR/GRR et al. Anybody else been up there after last weekend's storms?

According to the LA County DPW, GMR and GRR are currently closed due to snow.

saw that - but if I look at the various Strava segments for GMR/GRR, a few people have been up there since Monday.

Be careful. It's going to be very windy tomorrow (Sat). Sun will be a bit better.

Tried to ride GMR/GRR last Sat. (Jan. 28th) and GMR was fine but we hit snow about half way up the 3.5 mile climb (long before Cow Saddle). It was un-ride-able snow and ice and I walked about 1/4 mi. hoping it would get better . . . but instead it got worse.

So we turned back. We compensated by going down Little GMR to Camp Williams (met the new care-takers there) and back up Little GMR with a finish going down Big GMR.

Here it is on Strava: https://www.strava.com/activities/84...=global-footer

With the weather in the '70s, I decided to head to the mountains on Saturday. Went up to Mt Wilson since I can get there without needing to drive to the base (takes me an hour to get to the base at the 210).

Went up with nothing but a short-sleeved jersey and a light rain/wind jacket. Figured I would take off the jacket once I start the real climb. Left the jacket on since I really was not that hot. The road to the observatory was closed from Redbox due to icy roads. Perfect, no cars! Had no real issues going up, but going down was a different story. Absolutely froze my *** off. No sun, very windy, downhill. I was almost back to Redbox when I finally slipped on ice. Bike slipped out from under me and I landed on my left hip and whacked the back of my head. Of course, I fell in front of two hikers. Was a bit dizzy when I got up, but nothing major. Walked over to a sunny spot to recuperate.

At that point, I encountered two other cyclists going up to Mt Wilson wearing nothing but sleeved jerseys. Madness. They were worried about ice, but I told them the only bad part was the part I slipped on.

I warmed up at the fireplace at Redbox. Very nice guys working there. I was talking to one Italian guy there (so am I) and I told him it was weird for his name to be Eddie since it is not an Italian name. He told my his was born during the time of Eddy Merckx's reign, so his parents named him after him. Very cool. The young riders came back from their failed attempt to Mt Wilson asking for newspapers to stuff their jerseys. Ha! The descent from Redbox actually was not bad since it was sunny and the winds were not as bad.

Check out a picture from their Strava ride: https://www.strava.com/activities/847539601

I'm sticking to my side of the river until spring. Brrrrrrr.

Glad you made it up/down without too much of an issue. Wilson can be brutal when the conditions aren't favorable.
Ditto for the people at the Redbox shop! Their fireplace saved us one when we got caught in a rain storm.

Anyone been up GMR/GRR recently? LA County reports GRR still closed due to snow, but with the weather we're having I'm thinking it's probably rid-able, and even better closed to autos. A Strava segment shows 61 rides over GRR this month, just looking for an eyewitness report.

I did a "lobster" (Crystal Lake + GMR+GRR) ride without ski lift last Sat (Mar 11). GRR was closed to auto traffic. There were plenty of cyclists though. Caltrans crews were quite friendly. There was a San Bernardino sheriff, but no problem at all. The weather was gorgeous. Watch the debris and Caltrans trucks though.
