4-th of July weekend GMR ride

Let's try to revive this place with a BikeForums ride! "What's a BikeForums ride?" you might ask. Well, that means you're fairly new on the forum. Believe it or not - we used to organize rides around here. But that was back in the days when we were young and fit. Now we are just "and".
Anyway, I'm planning to do GMR on the 4-th of July weekend. If GMR is closed all 4 days, I'll go on Sunday (7/2), if it is closed just on the 4-th, then I'll go on the 4-th. Start at 8:00 AM from the Glendora High School. Anybody game?

I did this last July on the 3rd, somehow missed the few people from BF that actually showed up, and ended up going all the way to the lifts solo.

Tried it again in December of last year, literally everybody found a reason not to go, so I rode to the lodge solo.

So what I'm saying is, don't ask me to go, because if I do, no one else will show up.

I can probably go, either the 2nd, 3rd or 4th.

FYI GMR was not closed over the holiday weekend at all last year. We rode on Sunday 7/3 and there wasn't much traffic anyway so it was fine. We were also fortunate it was not crazy hot that day.

i ride gmr once a year and it's always during the 4th of july "weekend" closure. i'm off work mon/tues usually
and it falls on a tues this year. sat the 1st would be difficult for me but i'm game sun, mon or tues.
i'll need to start around 6:30/6:45am tho, not only to potentially make it back to san diego for work
or the lady, but also for the pre-shack heat. usually park at pioneer park to get a short warmup. keep me posted.

Hey ooga-booga, if you want a list of my excuses why I won't start earlier than 8 AM, then I'll have to start a new thread.
I usually keep an eye on this site for road closures: Road Closures Website
If the road is not closed on any of the 4 days, I'll go on Sunday. Whatever the case may be, I'm going. Must start doing some real climbing.

I'll be riding the other way this year - kid's got a water polo tournament in San Diego from June 30-July 2. If all goes well, wife's driving, I'm riding down. I'm out!

fair enuff. coming from san diego on a weekday, it's a 2 hr drive to angeles natl forest and a 2.5
hr drive to the santa monicas (both without traffic) i gotta leave by 4am to beat commuter traffic.
so i usually snarf a big breakfast if i arrive too early and start after or just attack at dawn.
that la basin traffic is more difficult than any hc climb. the heat is just a minor inconvenience.

Not sure which route they want to take exactly, but GMR is the start of that segment (which turns off GMR onto GRR).

I'll be up there at least one of the days, maybe two. GMR/GRR is a pretty easy climb, really, nothing too steep unless you do the Ski-Lift climb above Mt. Baldy Village.

I was off the bike with back injuries for about a month so just starting to get in shape but GMR is a great place to get my climbing legs working again.

If you know Karen Johnson (think PINK), she has a ride going to the village on the 4th, look for me there.

Is there a consensus on a date?

I do not own a car (crazy, isn't?), but I can make it to the base via the Gold Line if the start time is not too early. Alternatively, if anyone wants to do a climb starting in La Canada Flintridge, and take the Gold Line (or ride) back, I am up for that as well.

Wow, the gold line goes a lot further east than I thought. Take the train and then ride to the ride.

Unfortunately not (as of today). I bounced the idea by a few guys from my club, so I'll wait to find out if we reach consensus with them. Possible dates now are 7/1, 7/2 or 7/4. I'll update this thread on Thursday night. The start time will definitely be 8:00 AM and the location is Glendora High School parking lot.
