Ride of Silence - May 16 at 7pm

Coming to a city near you!

I am 90% sure I'm going to go to the one in Fullerton, which is starting at the Fullerton Museum Center. Probably ride there and ride home, which is about 11 miles each way for me.

Anybody else going to any of these? Specifically Fullerton's?

I've never done one (I think there's one in Orange too, might be closer for you) but they get a bunch of cyclists together and ride single or double file, usually about 10 miles or so at about 10-12 mph in total silence. The point is to remember those killed or injured while riding on our streets and to raise awareness that cyclists have a right to share the roads.

Here is a link to the OC rides. There are rides in Santa Ana and Huntington Beach that may be closer to you.

Ride of Silence: ORANGE COUNTY

I participated in the Irvine ride two years ago, anything we can do to raise awareness is good.

I understand why the ride is what it is, but my perception is that most of the drivers who saw us had no idea what it was all about. If it were up to me, I'd have the riders follow a hearse with a bike rack and white ghost bike on the back of it.

Probably true.

It is low budget and if they get enough people, maybe we get a soundbite on the news at 11. They seem to be more common than they used to be (and thankfully not in the morning)

I'm riding the one in Palm Desert from BikeMan's shop. I wrote to the local tv news station and the Desert Sun newspaper.

Only the tv station replied and said "We'll try to get out that way to cover the story"

Totally agree. I did the ride in Irvine maybe 10 years ago and had exactly the same thoughts. "Raise awareness"?? My S! Most of the ride was on the bike path along Barranca, out of sight of any drivers. Total waste of time. Never returned for that ride. It beats me how we manage to fool ourselves that we are doing something good. But I like the hearse idea. If you ever organize such a ride on the busiest streets in Irvine, I'll be there.

OCW just posted on Facebook that the Irvine ROS is cancelled, in case anyone here was planning on going.

I did the ride in Orange last night. Had a great time. Orange PD provided motor-officer support for crossing intersections all at one time. Invited 2 co-workers to ride and they both showed up and rode.
