I met an interesting guy in Seal Beach

Saturday morning I was taking a break at the end of the SGRT in Seal Beach. This guy comes flying up, stops and starts checking his computer, watch etc. The funny thing was that he was 74 (I asked), on a really nice unmarked carbon aero bike, but the really strange thing was that he was pulling a trailer. Not a child trailer, but it looked to be made out of steel tubing and by looking at it I would have guessed the trailer alone had to weight 35 lbs. The kicker was that he had a 25 lb barbell plate strapped inside the trailer. I obviously couldn't help myself and had to ask what's up with that setup. To make a long story short he said he's training for the upcoming RAAM and is part of an 8 man team. He said this was how he liked to train. He said something about riding in a 66 - 74(?) category.

Any of you guys seen him around? You definitely couldn't miss him. The contrast between the pro setup and pulling a home-made trailer with a weight in it kind of sticks out.

Yup! He and about 4 other dudes drafting him rode up on me yesterday, Saturday. He had a BOB trailer with the weight strapped to it, and that group must have going about 20 mph into the unforgiving headwind going south. I lasted just 20 yards......That guy is an animal.

While waiting for my group of friends to arrive at the Par 3 Golf Course parking lot in Arcadia this morning at about 10 am I saw the guy go by, pulling the trailer. He was heading south on the Rio Hondo trail. When my group got near Ling Beach I saw him again but he was going North while we were still heading South. He must have reached Long Beach then reversed directions. As mentioned above, I saw the black 25 lb cast iron weight in his trailer.

Somehow I DO NOT think he posts on the BF General Discussion sub-forum to elicit opinions on whether pulling weights is a harder workout.
