Cyclist killed in hit-n-run at Griffith Park

This one hits close to home, because I'm riding at Griffith Park multiple times a week.

https://www.cbsnews.com/losangeles/n...griffith-park/

The cyclist apparently had just finished a ride event at the park, which I'm guessing was this AIDS Life Cycle ride which was scheduled earlier in the day.

RIP

More info on the cyclist who was killed:

Quite a few other local cyclists I know are quite mad about the whole situation and want to pressure the park and city to do something about it. That road where the cyclist was killed routinely has cars speeding with no speed barriers. Irate drivers use the park as a way to cut around the surrounding freeway just to avoid traffic and usually don't give a rat's *#& about the people using the park for recreation and/or exercise.

wow that's some hole in the windshield! the car must have been going pretty fast

Sigh. Yet another reminder of the risks inherent in this hobby.

According to this (Update — Bike rider killed in Griffith Park AIDS/LifeCycle hit-and-run; driver may have been under the influence - BikinginLA), the collision happened "shortly before 4 pm", and the cyclist was "dead by the time first responders arrived at 4:54 pm." So about an hour elapsed. I cannot help but think that there was a possibility that the cyclist might have survived had the driver called first responders immediately rather than "fled on foot." I hope that the driver is punished to the fullest extent allowed by the law, and then some.

If I fitted an anti-tank mine to the rear of my bike, would that deter idiots from running me over and killing me?

No, someone texting would still run the mine over, and blow both you and himself/herself/themselves up.

The second link has a statement from a witness that the BMW was travelling at approximately 80 MPH in a 25 MPH zone, so yeah, he was going pretty fast.

BMW and an Acura - I wonder if some street racing was involved?

seems fair.

Someone I know was there when it happened and he showed me pictures of the accident scene with the car. The car appeared to have lost the front left wheel and skidded out of control. Either way, the car was definitely going at high speed when it happened. Many cyclists I know are putting pressure on the city and park to do something about the speeding cars in the area. Just the other week when I was riding there, there were a few cars zipping right passed me. It definitely could have happened to any of us.

I haven't even gone to Griffith Park to ride my bike since the accident. I've been opting to go trail riding on my gravel bike to avoid cars for this week!

The motorist needs to be charged with murder. Are we serious about traffic safety or not?

Gascon is the DA.

Nobody gets charged with murder!
