Opening CA Hwy 39 again...?

part of me says yes. part of me says no. anyone who has cycled it will tell you it is spectacular. the views are, supposedly, the bees knees.
caltrans still minimally maintains the road using snowplow/rockplow trucks with plenty of rockfall. guessing it would be subject to the same closures/guidance
that gmr/grr have on major holidays and/or storm/fire conditions.

So, it is closed to cars, can you sneak in and bike it?

I suspect the conditions right now (snow) would make riding it difficult (maybe impossible), but in recent warmer times, I know folks who have ridden the “Circle of Death” (Azusa-Hwy 39-ACH-La Cañada).

it's definitely happened and this weekend's rain/sleet/snow will dampen things but that is a helluva ride...especially with the surf and turf addition up to dawson saddle.

do not condone lawless behavior on record. riders will do what they will at whatever whim.

I've ridden that closed section a few times with my brother. I would not ride it solo due to the hazards and desolation. With that said, the ride and views are awe inspiring. Sad to say, if it is ever opened, it would just be another race course for wannabes and that would ruin it for cyclists unless one rides weekday mornings.

It could make a more user friendly experience for an alpine tour of the San Gabriel Mountains before crossing over to the San Bernardino Mountains.

What I'd like to see is it opened with no restrictions to human powered travel and a system the same as Rincon -Redbox for 4WD where you check in at the ranger station and get the combo to the lock. (I've both ridden and driven that one)

That would keep the traffic to a manageable level and insure a large enough user group to keep it accessible.
