The Pie ride sounds good but not sure if I'd keep up with you "monsters of climbing"! Sirlanceimnot is fast and always drops me, so I oughtta be used to it by now!

I'm getting confused with all the dates thrown up here(training rides). What's the date and time and place? If you don't mind, just to be clear.

OC, you sound really fast on the climbs! I just get there! :o

Beanz-
The Pie ride is Saturday January 28th, starting at 6:30am in Valley Center. I'm faster on the climbs than some and slower than others, don't worry bout' that. This is going to be a fun ride with riders of different abilities. We will stick together as much as possible and regroup often.

Sounds like fun! I was thinking about it, but not sure yet! If I go, would it be a problem if my wife Gina follows along in my truck? She's a pro sagger now! :D

That's it you're coming :D . It would be awsome of you're wife comes along, we can use all the support available.

Our group is up to about 14 riders, if everyone shows. Make sure to invite any friends along, it's not only for Bike Forum members. Maybe we can get up to 20?

Oh yeah, where's dhvaio, CycleFreakls and Yuan?? Are you guys in for this??

ovoleg 01-11-06 03:19 PM

What does SAG do exactly?

And what does it stand for?

Thanks :)

my58vw 01-11-06 03:38 PM

The term sag, in regards to cycling, refers to the vehicle or truck that follows a group of riders and provides "support and gear" during a ride. They are generally found in three distinct roles; in a race (race support vehicle), a touring situation (like RAMM), and long distance rides such as centuries and doubles. Their main task is to assist riders that have broken down, are injured or too tired to continue riding for some reason.

For this context a SAG vehicle as warrented because not only for the distance (greater than 100 miles) but for the amount of climbing (rumored over 10k feet). My job running the SAG vehicle is to make numerous passes of the group through out the day, help with flat tires and other mechanical problems, hold food, gear, extra clothing, setup rest areas on the route for the riders arrival (water, snacks, etc).

How sag is run is based on the ride and the situation of roads, etc. I try and stay with the group as much as possable. We will discuss phone contact etc. the day of the ride.

Thanks again, Mandy, for your support of this ride. :) And I like the shade of nail polish on your toes. :)

So I can blame you the cold I came down with yesterday. :p

No, blame it on my 2 year old that's always wiping his snotty face on me :D . I know I was pretty gross on Sunday, constantly spitting and snot rocketeering. This stupid cold has been running circles around or house for about 3 months now.

Do you think instead of trying to find specific landmarks (gas station, mini-marts, etc.) we should just choose some mile markers and have you run the rest stops? Everyone could just bring a bag with their own snacks (or we could do pot-luck style) and we'll bring a bunch of water and drink mix. It sure makes the logistics of getting rest stops in the right place a lot easier. Of course the Palomar Store and Julian Pie stop would still remain. What do the rest of you think, bring our own stuff and make our own stops, or try and use stores??

Hey, I'll be on the ride so no one need worry about going up the climbs slower than me. I've only been able to ride once every other week since the end of November and no riding at all for two months before then.

I've read your posts/replies and wonder if I've seen you on the SA Trail. I frequent it! I'm the big orange guy!:D

If you don't use stores/parks, and a rider has mechanicals back down the road, your lead group may have to wait for a drink if the sag doesn't show on time! Might be a long distance between the lead and following group to start with, without mechanicals.

It is really a coordination between a rider in the "fast" group and the SAG vehicle on having the food, drinks, gear, arrive at the same time. I would have to assume that the SAG stops would be regroup points and the riders would wait for the slower ones there. If not we could get spread out over a 10 or 20 mile section... and that is not optimal for either SAG or for the group. On a 120 mile ride I could easily see SAG stops about every 25 miles (5 stops total), or maybe 4 stops then the pie area and the stop at the store and at the climb.

There are two choices then; I will always have water and drink mix in the back on my car (in 5 gallon containers) along with some food. I would not rely on SAG for food entirely and pack some on your person just in case. As the group approaches the SAG point I could easily drive ahead, set up maybe a small folding table, etc, and be ready for the riders to come in. With rest stops no more than say 25 miles apart I could easily make it from the farthest mechanical to the SAG point within 30 - 35 minutes if things got bad.

We can all work this out with time. I will hopefully get a map and get a better idea of what is going on. With 2 bottles per bike you should be fine for atleast 25 miles before refilling (I hope :p ). Just think of this not as a "tour of palm springs" type ride with fixed staffed SAG points, but as a revolving SAG where you could ask for water or food anytime away form the SAG points and I could fill and bring you back water or food while on the bike.... very much like a race team car.

It is your choice entirely.

Hey Mr. Beanz,

I'll look out for you now that I see that orange jersey. There are so many people that you see on the trail, some you wave to and some just look familiar. I just got a new computer at work here and lost some of the pics I had on the old one, tonight I'll see if I've got one of me although I don't believe I have one of me on the bike.

I brought my bike to work today and will try to get in an hours worth of riding before the sun sets.

Are you going on the ride this Sunday?

Ralph

No, I don't get off work til 1:15 am and sleep til 3 am. It's hard to travel and do early rides when your body is not used to getting out of bed at 3 or 4 am!

If I do the pie ride, I'll take a vacation day the night before!

I wanted to do GMR but can't get info. Those ranger dudes say you gotta call the other office and hang up before you can get an answer! Then the guys that give do you another number, give you the wrong one! I drove up to GMR to get the number off the lighted sign, but so many bulbs missing, I can't make out 75% of the numbers

I plan on doing the pie ride, but only if Caligurl goes! :D

Hey Beanz,
I spoke to some guys on my group ride this morning that did GMR last weekend. Sounds like maybe the closure is just a workday thing. That's what I'm hoping for, if the weather is okay Sunday morning, I plan on doing GMR up to the Ski Lifts. Weather.com shows rain and snow for Mt Baldy on Sunday  , but then it shows sunny for Glendora?? As long as there's no ice on the roads, I plan on going for it. I don't think I'd get back from the OC ride early enough to keep the brass happy ;), and I've been putting off a Baldy ride for about 2 months now.

Usually you see another rider or two at the bottom and they let you know how the conditions are. Come to think of it, one of the last times I did it, it said closed to cyclists. Another rider there said, "it's open now", so we went for it. IT was a bit dirty, but ok! :D

I need to get out there too, depending on the weather. I may go if I survive my Saturday ride with Gina on the tandem. She rode for the first time in 6 months, last weekend. When she rides, she rides well, but after a lay off, it feels like GMR for me! :o

Extort 01-13-06 02:09 PM

Hey everyone,
I have the route slip all prepared -85.6 miles of terrain- and will gladly send it to anyone (PM me your e-mail).

As for where to meet in Tustin Market Place... Last BF ride we met next to the Red Robin, which is almost on the northwest corner of El Camino Real and Jamboree near West Drive. See #22 on the map

8:30 AM is the start time, and I'll be there about a half hour early drinking coffee.

See you soon!

Chucklehead 01-13-06 05:08 PM

i might not be able to make this one...
i've got an unexpected visitor, so i might have to hang out around here for the next few days. still want to go, but don't wait for me.

jschen 01-13-06 06:36 PM

I've cycled a total of 12 miles since my ride last Sunday. :( And I have no good excuse. I've just been lazy in the mornings. :o I doubt my slacking during the week is too badly hurting my training for really long (by my standards) rides since none of the rides would have been much over an hour anyway, but it's certainly not helping things. And I hope I still remember how to climb. We'll see tomorrow and Sunday, I guess.

Sunday, rain or shine???

Happily, the rain's supposed to end early Saturday night.

That's good to know, even though I have a scheduled ride with my buddies tomorrow morning. Since we don't ride in the winter after work I only ride with them every other weekend and to miss it because of rain it turns into a month! Sucks.

So are you guys ready to kill me on Sunday???

Ralph

jschen 01-13-06 07:29 PM

^^^Tomorrow morning's supposed to be fine, too, though a bit cool. The rain should start falling around noon. I'm hoping to squeeze in a ~2 hour ride before heading to work.

We meet at 8:00 by Angel Stadium and go to the beach and back, hopefully the possibilityof getting a little wet won't scare off the others.

[edit] You're in SD, it's supposed to start raining up here at 6am and go all day.
