Another set of Pirelli PZero Nero M+S except this time i ordered 5 since i finally have a set of 5 RS wheels so i can have a full size spare. I actually have 9 RS wheels now. The other 4 will get summer or autoX tires (probably Falken Azenis 615s) after winter probably. My current Pirellis (on the stock wheels) are getting worn and a bad alignment ate up the inside edge faster than the rest of the tread. I'm pretty sure i can get another 5-10k miles out of them easily but i'll put them up for sale for cheap when the new tires show up and i get them mounted. Hopefully someone'll need them.
I found a used but great condition SE Spyderco Paramilitary for $85 shipped over on www.bladeforums.com (another one of my occasional hangouts).
Oh, and sweet CX bike! I really need to make it to one of the SoCal CX events. I'm pretty sure my CX bike is getting tired of commuting duty...

Finally made the plunge to get the Jimi plastic wallet (in red) based on recommendations by Joy and Dan; and since my ziplock bag has started bio-degrading.

Have you had them removed from the wheel and flipped and ran it on the other side? (Assuming that they are unidirectional) - I usually flip mine every 5-7k miles due to the negative camber that I run, and it's helped in prolonging the life of them. Technically speaking, you can't "rotate" them per se, but there are ways you kinda can.

I've already got over 40k miles (maybe even close to 50k) out of the tires though so i'm not disappointed even with the bad alignment (front right was toe'd out just a bit probably from hitting some pothole and i ended up rotating every tire through that spot before i figured out the problem). I rotate at every oil change (5k miles) so i usually get alot more miles than most other people report.
I've stayed away from unidirectional tires simply because i didn't want to have to pay $$$ to get them flipped just to be able to rotate them to the other side. I like asymmetrical tires since i can rotate them to all 4 corners with ease. Speaking of which, i've gotta rotate my tires when i get home...

I bought some new bicycle equipment. It is imperative that I use it on a ride before my Century ride this Saturday. No one should take out new equipment without a pre-check ride! Don’t you agree? So here is what I have bought and need to test out before Saturday. There is a story somewhere.
New wheels:
Mavic OP custom built 32/32 silver
CX-Ray stainless steel spokes (aero, you could cut cheese with these blades)
Brass nipples all around
Veloplugs instead of rim tape
White Industries H1 hubs chrome
Upgraded White Industries H1 hubs with ceramic bearings
Salsa Ti skewers-red
New Conti Gator Skins
Used patched up tubes (I needed something I was familiar with)
New spandex:
PI arm warmers
PI knee warmers
Voler long sleeve base layer
Voler riding shorts
The story:
The skewers arrived a week ago.
The wheels arrived late Tuesday.
The spandex arrived Wednesday.
I originally ordered the OP’s 32R/28F silver, but got a call from the builder that Mavic does make the 28 in silver anymore. The hot color now is black. Did I want to go black? I opt for 32 and 32 and stay with silver. The plan is to take my Ultegra 12/27 cassette from my old rear wheel and put it on the new wheel. I need to get all of this stuff tested before Saturday’s ride or I am not going to use it. After placating the spousal unit after work Tuesday I boldly announce I am going out to the garage to work on my new wheels. She says something to the effect I was wondering when you were going to get to that. Anyway, putting new tires on new rims was easy. Setting up and installing the front wheel was just as easy. I removed the cassette from the old wheel and proceeded to install it on the new hub being careful to keep all the cogs and spacers in order. But before I installed it I took the opportunity to do some deep cleaning on all the cogs. I carefully put the cassette on the new hub and proceed to tighten the compression ring. Not to tight. The inter cogs wobbled. I take it off and put it on again. This time I tighten it more, but it is not right. I stop. I have a day to investigate this on the Mechanical BF site. On Wednesday a quick search turns up many threads about cassette wobble. The common factor and some even speak to Mavic wheels that one my need a 1mm spacer before the cassette goes on. I leave work 20 minutes early so I can get to the LBS. I briefly describe my issue and that my investigations point to the need for a 1mm spacer. They know about this and think I am on the right track. I walk out with a 1m spacer feeling pretty good about myself. The deadline to ride is tonight, but I know I have a handle on this. Once home I take very little time before I am out in the garage working on the issue. Spacer followed by cassette. It is not a spacer issue! I know because with the spacer on the last cog, 12 will not go on. I proceed to put on the cassette again without the spacer while my mind runs through all sort of terrible thoughts. The wrong hub is installed. The hub is damaged. The cassette is bad. I tighten it up and up. The wobble is gone, BUT the inter cogs have free place. They move a small amount independently forward or backward from the outer cogs at either end of the cassette. Some progress here (no wobble), but this is not right. I know it. I tear it down again and very so carefully install it again watching how I stack the cogs on the hub. Same result. I stop. I call the LBS and fine out they are open until 7pm. With new wheel and cassette installed I am off to the LBS with my plastic card ready for damages. It was obvious walking into the LBS I needed help. One only needed to see my facial expression, dirty oversized t-shirt not tucked in, tennis shoes with no socks and wheel in hand. I showed the mechanic and he said it is not right. It is probably a stacking issue. I admitted I stacked it. In about three minutes they are handing me back my wheel all fixed, corrected at no charge. (This LBS did not build these wheels.) It was a cog stacking issue. The cassette and all cogs are tightly fitted with no wobble or free play. I had every cog and spacer on correctly, but the last cog. The 12 toothed cog. As it was explained to me, this one cog is deceiving in its fit onto the hub. If this cog’s orientation is not correct it does not matter how tight you make the compression ring the cogs will not align. I am home and finish up the rear wheel install on the bike. I am feeling pretty good again. I change into my spandex with the intent for a short 10-15 mile ride with very little climbing. The bike works flawlessly. Man does it coast and go down hill fast. I can not tell much more than that right now. The White Industries H1 hub does make noise when you don’t pedal, but it is very minimal. The shorts and long sleeve base layer are fine (I am familiar with this brand.), the PI arm warmers are good, but I have bought one size to large for the PI knee warmers (I bought large.) So they act and look like leg warmers on me. I have to pull them up so high on my leg that little Herman got caught in the elastic band. This required an emergency stop and adjustment on the ride. The only stop I made. I completed all of this with time left to push the spousal unit into a walk with me around the neighbor hood, but not until she finished the last few pages in the book she was reading and a potty stop.
These wheels were bought this year to offset the coast of next year’s purchase of a new bicycle. At that time I will install a new cassette on these wheels and move them to the new bicycle after the BB is upgraded with ceramic bearings.

40k miles is awesome. I'd be lucky to get 25-30k out of a set of mine. I usually just go to my friend's shop in Walnut and use his Hunter mounting/balancer. Trouble is - he just sold his shop to his partner . . . gotta find another shop to be chummy with.
[car geek side always welcome with me]
Back on topic - my Oakley Radar Asian-Fit came in yesterday - and compared to the standard Radar, they sit better on my nose and the edge of the lens barely touches my cheekbone. The view out of the black iridium lens is amazing, and I'll give them a shot tomorrow morning when I ride.

Hey Mark, glad you got it all worked out.
On those wheels with your cassette you actually need 2 spacers. The Mavic spacer needed is 2mm and the spacer that comes with the DA cassette is 1mm. Use them both.

Hey Mark, it could of gone down like this. Mark gets wheels and attempts a casette swap and runs into problems. Mark calls N2GLOCK for advice on what to do next. N2GLOCK drives 4 miles to Marks house and diagnoses problem as stacking issue. N2GLOCK fixes problem and tightens lock ring to 40nms with a torque wrench. Mark rides his old bike with new wheels

But if I had done that my story would have been much more benign.
BTW: You want to buy a pair of PI knee warmers, large and only used once. Herman is my witness.
