Hi Julian. Are you new to So Cal? You guys took this ride over, huh? By the way, what's the Julian pie? (I ride to eat, so this detail is critical in my decision to register...:p )

I did The metric Borrego to the Sea last year....
The pie and ice cream was the best!!!!

Ok ride, until you drop into Imperial County...the roads were aweful at that point...and coming downhill at speed when you hit them...very rough road...I am still looking for my teeth that vibrated out...

:lol: I know what you mean. I lost my front teeth last year at the Palm Springs Century. Please tell me the roads aren't THAT bad! :eek:

Hmm..I actually thought PS wasn't to bad..yeah there was one spot..Airport rd I think...
Sorry..this was worse....you come down a nice descent and then hit this at speed and I think it was 5 or miles to the turn around..then you do it again heading back...slower, but still chattering...my hands hurt after...and I even have Buzzkills...didnt help!

the section in imperial is THAT bad... even ruby couldn't cushion it! but it's a short section!

and yes... the horrible part of TdePS in in indio... airport road... you have to cross over and ride the wrong way!

The majority of the roads are good except for the stretch in Imperial County. I will check into the exact mileage of the Imperial stretch. Some day they have to repave it, but who knows the day? Funny thing is they are the hardest county of the two we use to get permits for and they are the most expensive too.

R&B Bicycle Club is still the same organization putting it on but we have increased the distance this year to satisfy the mileage junkies.

Julian Pie is made in Julian and delivered fresh that day to Borrego Springs. Crumb top apple pie served with ice cream.

Not one stoplight during the whole ride!

the ride really is great.... don't let the one SMALL stretch of bad road stop you from going..... the rest MORE than makes up for it (not to mention the pie and dudley bread!)

I have to agree...sorry if I sounded too negative...the bad part is only a small piece of the ride...
And the pie was the best I have ever had...made it all worthwhile!!

I did Borregeo to the Sea two years ago(?) The year before the big rain. It was nice. Only one small section of rough road right before the turn around. Maybe 1/2-1 mile.

Would you consider creating a double metric or century next year?? Just curious. :D

I'd consider it for sure.

I called the organizer up and there is still a lot of availability. This seems like a good starter century for a lot of people since it is relatively flat (much like the AMTrack Century). A good way to get base miles in for sure.


I am definitely considering it if we get a good group together.

Unless the road surface is so terrible that its not worth going I know I will be making this my first Century. It looks fairly simple and thats what I want for my first time out. I will save the 12k ft of climbing for next time!

other than the VERY SHORT section in imperial county that is bumpy (but still quite do-able)... there is nothing wrong with the roads.... rarely is there a century or organized ride where all the roads are perfect or everyone is happy with the route.... i'm the "organized ride queen" (i do a LOT of organized rides) and there are VERY few that come to mind that i won't do again.... (actually i can only think of one ride that is off my list out of all that i've done over the last two years) as i said in an earlier post... i would not NOT do this ride over the VERY SHORT section in imperial.... that's just silly! (note: that's a double negative... meaning i would very much do this ride!)

this ride... at least the last two years when it was borrego to the sea... is beautiful and well supported...

that said... what i'm not a fan of... is the redoing the same part of the course again to get the century (they so the same for their february tour of borrego).... i prefer to be out doing my ride then come back.... not loop around... and redo part of the route again.... however i'll give it a chance cuz i love R&B's rides AND i understand there aren't that many roads out there to work with, having done the two borrego rides.... the apple pie and julian bread are worth it... or at the least... i can do the metric borrego to the sea ride!

as for making it a double or double metric... there aren't enough roads out there to do that without just doubling or tripling up the route... this ride was fine as a metric.... i think it has potential as a century... (we'll know in january) but there really is not need to make it into a double metric or double century... there are plenty of them for riders wanting that kind of mileage!

I want to do this but it's the same weekend as the Track World Cup in L.A. so I'm gonna have to pass and maybe just do Stagecoach the week before.

stagecoach is two weeks before borrego.....

In the next two weeks we will have a full report on the Imperial Country road conditions and mileage.

Right now we are very busy preparing for this weekend's Tour de Julian Bike rides.

The reason we loop is to stay off the main highways which on weekends are full of large motorhomes and trucks with "toy haulers".
The main "selling points" to this century are the views, for the most part wide roads with good shoulders, lighter traffic and no stop lights and only a few stop signs. Although Borrego is a drive for most people, we feel it offers the best desert road riding anywhere.
We are limiting this ride to 400 riders so our staff does not get overwhelmed. At this point there is plenty of ride slots left.

World Cup is Jan 19-21 this year. The Lightning Velo Winter Classic and Swap Meet are the week after.
