San Diego training rides?
Hey everyonve. I am new around here. I have been lurking for a few months. I recently got my first bike (Bianchi Eros) and have been loving every minute. I am contemplating tackling the stagecoach century in Jan and was looking from some ideas for good training rides.
Routeslip is busted at the moment so I was just wondering where others are riding. I live in Encinitas and ride around that area but I am up to go pretty much anyhere in San Diego (or South OC for that matter)
Thanks
- Brad

Welcome aboard Brad. There are lots of great routes here in San Diego. There a number of great cycling clubs in town that hold some great weekend rides that would be good for training. The San Diego Bicycle Club (SDBC) has a large Saturday ride that has a route for all levels (A, B, C, C++ and D). You can check it out here:
https://www.sdbc.org/html/satride.html
New riders are welcome. The C ride is even coached and if you are new to cycling they will run you through the basics of riding with a group.

Also, here's a link to the North County Cycle Club. One of their members runs https://nccc.fullcommitment.com/ which has links to maps and route slips for about 70 or so North County rides. Most pass near Encinitas.

You might want to consider some climbing, SDBC ride is a good start, biggest climb is Torrey though.
You'll probably want to start heading inland to get some hills. I've got some good routes that I do on my routelist and can post them when the site is back up. 30 miles with 5000+ feet of climbing.

Ok, it's simple. Leave my house, head west on Mast, get onto the 52, take the 52 to Santo, exit santo, south to Clairmont, east to Ruffin, Ruffin/Kearney to Miramar/Pomerado, east on Pomerado, Right on Scripps, Right on 67, Right before mapleview at the Lakeside sign, right on Channel, right on Riverford, Left onto El Nopal. I'm pretty sure it was 5000+, could be 3000+, but anyway, it's lots of uphill in 30 miles. Another route which wouldn't kill everyone would be east out old 80 to Willow and back, 20-25 miles uphill, 20-25 down. Of course, I'm on a recumbent, and you know those don't climb.

Whoever forms a critical mass gets to help make those key decisions. (Without a critical mass, I end up deciding at the last minute with whoever wants to go or riding solo.) If we do South Grade, East Grade, and an optional trip to the observatory, starting from the casino sounds great. As for start time, depends on the route, but for such a route, perhaps 6:30-7:30 sometime. (Keep in mind the clocks roll back the night before, so it's like starting 7:30-8:30.) I'm pretty flexible, as long as I get a good amount of steady climbing in.

Ok, I was able to sneak in there and pull up my routelist. My scripps loop is 36.72 miles with 5443 feet of climbing. Of course this is all based off of google maps, but I'm pretty good at following the roads with lots of waypoints on the routes, so I figure it's fairly accurate. There are a couple good hills between Santee and San Diego, take advantage of them.
Here's the loop.

Wow. That's a lot of climbing for not doing hill repeats.

As much of this as you'd like to consider would be a great ride, e.g.,
-- From Encinitas, go south to Torrey Pines,
-- then, to Pacific Beach via the bike path alongside the RxR that picks up at Gilman Drive,
-- from Pacific Beach, go to Fiesta Island along Mission Bay Drive, going around and past Sea World,
-- staying on the bike route past Sea World to West Mission Bay Drive, heading to Ocean Beach,
-- take Nimitz up to Point Loma,
-- then, take the scenic route to the Pt. Loma Lighthouse.

Tried the S grade road on my tri bike.....very bad idea. Switched to an older bike with lower gearing and had a grand time. Man the motorcycle guys are crazy on that road
