The I'm So Sick of Being Sick Ride, 1-1-07

I am so stinking sick and tired of being sick and tired. I'm going to publickly announce that tomorrow I'm going to go for a ride, even though being on that bike has all the charm of an jalapeno enema, because that way I can't change my mind and wimp out because "I just don't feel like going. I'll go tomorrow." And then, if someone else shows up, then I HAVE to go. Maybe some fresh air in my lungs instead of all this partially combusted CO will do me some good. Having some pleasant conversation and laughing (eviably healthy) people around will probably even do me some more good, and take my mind off how awful I feel.

I'm going to a New Year's Eve Tango Party tonight, so it won't be early. 11:00 am?

From my house in Altadena, then east (staying well north of the parade route) and south about 15-20 miles, and then back. Not a challenge ride, not a training ride, just a "get out of the house and not give in to how yucky my body feels" ride.

"Resistance is the secret of joy."

I'm riding with Vertical Bob, Bill, and you are welcome to join. We're starting in Glendale and riding up to Red Box on Angeles Crest (a climb but NOTHING like what you did the other day) and then right back down. I just left him a voicemail begging for a 9:30 start in lieu of 8:30! I'm so tired but can't fall asleep. Anyway, you should come join. I'll be climbing in my granny at 3 mph, trust me!

God, I miss southern California where the wife and I could find a place to do Argentine Tango every night of the week. I would be up for the ride if you had it go up Fargo Street.

ugh...I've been sick for almost two weeks, it's really annoying, everyone at work has the same thing, but I took my first ride on Saturday...only 17 miles..but it made me feel much better...it cleared all the pipes...

I haven't been riding since because we spent NYE in Vegas...I drank way too much so I'm a bit "under the weather" at the moment..it was a mad 24 hrs...

Anyway, I'll start my am BB rides again on weds if anyone is interested (7 or 7:30 am start)...

Happy new Year all!!

Well, for anybody who wasn't wondering, I did go for my ride -- out to Myrtle street in Duarte and back home again. I feel pretty sick, but at least it's the "maybe 30 miles was just a little too ambitious given how sick I still am" kind of sick, instead of that passive, "I just can't get up again and fight anymore" kind of sick. The sunlight and fresh air felt good. Moving my body through space felt good. Refusing to give in to sickness and despair felt good. Psychologically, it was good, that I was meeting the new year on my feet, shield up, sword at the ready, willing to take on all challengers, and giving no quarter to despair. I may be a little short of joy and triumph today, but I've still got plenty of "fight" left.

Maybe another bike ride tomorrow, maybe another rest day tomorrow. I haven't decided. But one thing's for sure -- on a bike, nothing seems terribly impossible, and maybe the meaning of life, the universe, and everything really is as simple as "42" and I make things so difficult for myself by thinking it has to be more complicated than it is, and taking everything way too seriously, and being such a stress puppy about every little thing. I actually had a motorist yield the right of way to me (like he was SUPPOSED to) before making a right turn, and as I caught his eye, and noticed how cute he was, and that he was driving a gorgeous, sparkly bright midnight blue Mustang, I decided that "six times seven" works for me.

Thanks, Big John and ME. I'm tired now, but I think it was good on several levels. Next assignment, round up something decent to eat, and then take a good rest day. Next big challenge -- ballet class on Wednesday night. I really want to be back on the track at full throttle by Saturday, and back on my schedule of road miles next week. That bike race at the end of the month has me worried. I feel about as competitive as a bowl of soup. Wait. That sounds suspiciously like self-sandbagging. We are n't supposed to do that any more. Okay -- let's try again -- I want to be literally back in the saddle, because I feel like a seasoned gladiator, and I have a blood lust that has been unfed for more than two months now. And I'm getting really restless.

Here's the link, Renee. It's a ridiculously steep street that riders climb every year in the Fargo Hill Challenge: https://www.lawheelmen.org/fargo.htm
