Indian Wells to remove bike paths from Highway 111

Indian Wells CA wants to convert bikepaths on Highway 111 into an extra traffic lane.

In years past, I rode and enjoyed that bike lane. It was wide enough to provide some buffering from traffic. Without it, the best road running the length of the valley will become a dangerous ride for cyclists. Indian Wells has a history of favoring only the rich. As a city, it has no public high school and no city parks. Their attitude seems to be that anyone who counts belongs to a country club anyway.

It's typical Indian Wells timing to reduce bicycling facilities just when the President is recommending reducing gas consumption. I have written them to protest. If you want. Here is the contact address.

The bike lane can be seen on the left of the photo.

That sums it up well. It's not even as wealthy as it pretends to be. I just hope that people from the bike forums will take the time to write even a few words to them. The volume of email might help the desert city cyclists.

Maybe this event will also inspire the locals to form a bicycle advocacy group which is needed.

Indian Wells CA wants to convert bikepaths on Highway 111 into an extra traffic lane.

Letters can also be sent to the Desert Sun Newspaper, which has already given a thumbs down to the Indian Wells plan: https://www.thedesertsun.com/letters

Since this is a state highway, I doubt Indian Wells is the decision maker here. They will make their pitch to the state. I would suggest contacting CalTrans and your state representative.

I Just drove down Hwy. 111 a few weeks a go and I noticed the bike lane. The firt thought that crossed my mind was " it sure would be nice to come down to Palm Springs one weekend and ride on Hwy. 111"
Hope it stays!
