Temescal Fire Road <-> Topanga Fire Road

Does anyone know the condition of the Temescal Fire road and topanga fire road. I'm looking for a way to get into topanga without going up Topanga (or Las Flores/Tuna Canyon, too steep for now) and this route looks interesting. I'm assuming it's hard packed dirt, which I've done on my touring bike with 28/32 tires before. That would work if the road isn't really rocky. If the route is rocky, I'd want a mountain bike and therefore, would be far less appealing to me.

So, basic questions:

- How's the road?
- I'm assuming the road uphill with manageable inclines (under 10% grade) for a vast majority of the climb from temescal, is that correct?

Vancemac and I were up there last weekend and the roads are in great shape, but that was before last nights rain. It's not rocky for the most part and there is some sand, but I know others who go up there on touring bikes. Be prepared for some steep grades, however.

Sand I can handle, stretches of road with fist sized rocks I can't handle without my dreaded mtb. I figured it would have to be steep in areas as it looks to be 1500-2000 feet of elevation in 5 miles or so. I'll give it a try on the touring bike once it drys out a bit. Thanks!
