Hit & Run, cyclist in critical condition (Newport)

Just saw this on TV:

https://cbs2.com/local/local_story_066141815.html

(CBS) NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. Newport Beach police investigating a hit-and-run that left a bicycle rider critically injured Wednesday were looking for a vehicle believed to be a silver or light-blue Toyota Previa van.

The collision on Dover Drive near Cliff Drive, just north of Coast Highway, occurred about 6:30 a.m., according to Newport Beach traffic Investigator John Hudson.

Broken auto parts found at the scene indicated the suspect vehicle was a 1991-97 Previa, which likely has damage to the right front-end area, including a wheel, he said. It was last seen headed north on Dover Drive.

The victim, whose name was not released, was reported in critical condition with stable vital signs at Western Medical Center in Santa Ana, Hudson said.

Anyone with information about the accident or the suspect vehicle was asked to call Hudson at (949) 644-3746.

There's a video on the website. The bike is a Bianchi 10 speed(well, they call all road bike "10 speed") with non-aero brake levers. So it's late 70s-early 80s.

I heard about this on our group ride this morning, it's disgusting and scary. Just as the thoughts of a hit-n-run were leaving my head, we rolled up to an intersection where a teamate had just been hit by a car (University and Harvard). Luckily, it looked like he wasn't in too bad of shape, and the car that hit him (private security car) had stopped.

I almost hit a jogger in my neighborhood today. The sun was hitting me in the eyes just as I pulled out of my driveway and she was in the road (not on the sidewalk). I barely missed her and it scared the hell out of me. Point being, it reminded me (along with the tragic news about this rider and Octico's precious wife who was hit yesterday) that being out on the road is just dangerous. It won't stop me from riding, but it has shaken my false sense of safety (burst my bubble, I should say)! As for the hit and run drivers, there is no excuse for that kind of behavior for sure. I hope they find the person who hit this cyclist and throw his/her ass in jail. Yes, I DO think those that don't take responsibility for their actions (especially actions that cause bodily injury) SHOULD go to jail if only for a year or two!

Makes me want to stick to riding my mountain bikes.... at least the only obstacle there is the occasional mountain lion or a tree jumps in front of you...

I think the more we ride the more complacent we get merider...I know I'm guilty of doing that anyway...especially near the end of a long, tiring ride...it only takes a split second.....

In the last several months we have had riders hit or downed on Newport Coast, Bison and the ever popular University and Harvard area. One rider trusted us to keep his taco'd bike at the fire station. Hasn't came back for it yet...... Our condolences to the rider who passed away while riding up NPCD one lonely morning last month. Ride defensive and with a friend.
