Weir Canyon Fire

You may have seen or heard Weir Canyon is currently on fire.
Here is the latest information that I have from the command center...

As of 1:00 PM PST

300 acres burned

The upper 1/2 of Weir Canyon (IRLR and Santiago Oaks portions) has burned.

O (zero) containment

700 crews working

Mandatory evacuations for Orange Park Acres and Anaheim Hills areas as homes in these areas are threatened by the fire. The last time Weir Canyon burned was 1982

The fire started when someone intentionally ignited a vehicle on the 241 toll road. They had stolen the car and abandoned it after setting it on fire. (hope someone is arrested and I will personally shoot them!).

Weir Canyon is one of my favorite MTB areas. So much wildlife will be disrupted and some much lovely land and trail destroyed. Please pray no homes are effected although the fire is coming very very close.

I rode Chino Hills today and the fire looks pretty big. Winds was blowing pretty good. Hope they can put this out soon.

I was out on SART today... There was smoke galore covering a good 5-7 mile stretch just south of Angel Stadium...

I was wondering where the fire was. So much smoke overhead, it's given the day an orange/pink glow with a lot of ash falling.

I have two friends who have been evaculated out of their homes. The fire started close to the 91 freeway on the 241. It is now burning through Weir Canyon and Santiago Oaks. This is very close to the back side of Irvine Park. Irvine Park was closed today and is being used as a command post for the fire department. There are many brand new multi million homes lining this area so I can imagine all will be done to save the area. I hope the wind contiues to blow strongly towards the South as eventually once it meets Irvine Park they should get it under control.

My friends live on off Serrano in Anaheim Hills. It's been scary day for them. I've been praying that they are kept safe. I also prey the poor critters do well but with so little room for them to roam, it doesn't look good. This is a highly sensitve econological area. I was scheduled to lead a MTB ride next Sunday up Stagecoach Rd, right where the fire is burning. I guess it's probably cancelled. All the wildflowers were just beginning to show. I also planned on riding Chino Hills today, made it to my friends house off Serrano. Once we figured she was OK and her family and their cats safely hauled off, my friend and I got in the car and headed down to Aliso Woods instead. No wind down there but it was blazing hot!

I live a few miles from it. It looks like it burned through Santiago Oaks.

Here are my pics.

I live off of Cannon and Chapman in Orange. I'm still about 3-4 miles from the fire, but it's been kinda crazy with all the road closures and stuff around. I did manage to drive out to Temecula area today, but the smoke plumes along the 91 were outta control!

Glad I road yesterday!

Those of us who live up in North County close to the fire woke this morning with the acrid smell of smoke (I can barely breathe - talk about an allergy attack!) in the air and the what would be a clear sky is going to be dark and dirty. The fire has burned from the 91 Freeway side of Weir Canyon all the way to Irvine Park and up over into Santiago Oaks so essentially all the open reserve land currently managed by the The Nature Conservancy has been burned. Not that fires are a bad thing. Many plants and animals needs an occasional fire to bloom or thrive but it is still so sad to see the area go up in smoke. Those of use to ride Weir Canyon and Santiago Oaks will miss the scenic rides, at least for awhile and knowing from experience what happened after the Sierra Peak fire, the trails will be damaged by bulldozers and other equipment.

God bless the firefighters and keep them safe and out of harms way. A testiment to their strength and courage is that few homes, which totally line the Canyons, have been fire damaged (although no doubt many have sustained smoke damage). The loss of wildlife in an already very senisitive area will be sad. There were several mountain lions that lived in both Oaks and Weir and I can't imagine where they have gone, there really is no room to move. No doubt they will end up in someone's neighborhood and in trying to protect "Fluffy" the lion will be killed. Yet another tragedy of the fire.

My prayers are with the firefighters and with the families that have suffered losses. I also pray the authorities find the culprits who started the fire!
