The Bloated Mr. Beanz Bloat Ride Report!

Gina had to work today so I thought I'd take advantage of the sit to take in a mtn ride. I started at Encanto Park at about 8 am. I rode up Hyw 39 to East Fork, Lil Gmr to GRR then to Baldy Village. My legs must be coming back as the climbing was much easier this time than it was back in November when we did the Bloat Ride. I used my triple Lemond but didn't touch the 3 lowest geared cogs in order to simulate the double (53/39) I have on my Cannondale. I plan to use the Cannondale on BA as it is much stiffer and a better climbing bike. I'm not sure I could have made it up last November without the lowest gears.

Must have been due to the fact that Big GMR is closed to cyclists on Saturdays that there weren't many riders up there at all! I saw 2 riders on LIttle GMR and 2 on GRR. I did the ride alone which made it a bit mentally tougher. Nobody to chase or be chased. At about 5 miles before the Village I was tempted to turn back as I had planned to be home a bit early. At this point, I was really tempted to cut it short as this is usually the toughest part of a GMR ride for me. I arrived at the village with about 3 hours on my ride time. No way was I going to be back early. I could have gone straight down Baldy to my home, but then Gina would have had to drive me back for the truck. Why wuss out? I headed back up to GRR for the return. SO what if I'm a bit late.

It was fairly easy on the return up to the point of the little cafe on East Fork. My gosh, I thought it would be easy. A few rollers but the WIND! I was pushing hard doing 8 mph on the flat sections. I suffered but figured I'd have it easy heading down HWY 39. NOT! WIND and some uphill. Who puts an uphill on a downhill? At the start I was facing a headwind and was actually happy that I'd have a tailwind on the way down. NOT! The wind always seems to find a way to shift when I don't need it! Finally I hit the trail section fo the return and get a bit of help. Doing 21 at the end of the ride was great. Not because I thought I was kicking butt, but because I had to go pee really bad!

Last November I believe we did 6,700 ft of climbing as we returned down GMR. This time I returned on HWY 39 which seemed to have a bit more climbing so I figure maybe 6,800 ft?

Though I felt good, it seemed a bit tough being out there all alone for the 68 mile/5:03 hour ride. 5:44 total time as I tried to limit my stops. How time flies! After the ride, we drove out to Peformance so that I could reward myself with 2 new tires, 3 waterbottles, a new pair of shorts, new pedals, and Terry Fly saddle for the tandem!

I'm still trying to figure out why they call this "Little GMR". Doesn't feel so little when you're on it!

A picture of my lonesome handlebars heading to Baldy!

I wish you were too! It was very lonely out ther today. I figure all the riders will be out there on Sundays from now till May. GMR is closed on Saturdays and it shows. I did run into a group of about 10 riders at the village. They said they tried to ride up GMR but the construction guys "WOULD NOT" let them pass!..They had to ride across Foothill then up Baldy Rd.

Oh yeah, I nearly died doing that on friday! My first time, and definitely will not happen again till I figure out another watering spot. What is this restaurant on east fork that you speak of??

Nobody had any work to give me @ the office, so I took off @ 2, and headed west from claremont. Filled up the bottles at the horse park at the base of GMR, and then back to Sierra Madre and the detour to Azusa. I ate it in the encanto parking lot, looking for a spigot or some such, and not looking at speed bumps. Oops. Fixed wheel, computer, then bleeding knee, and headed uphill. Found the little store at the trailer park, but got chased off, and so continued riding. So this is the point that I realize I'm going to be in trouble w/water (and food! 4 gels turned out to be insf.) I get to about 6 miles from village, and just hit a wall. My hands and face start going numb and I have serious trouble pushing anything in the 2nd ring. I get to baldy mtn rd, and start down, but I can tell my balance is off, so I don't push the speed like usual. I see cars behind me, and I pull over at a turn out, try to unclip, and just fall. Oh boy. Get up, go for another good ways, pull over for the cars and hit the ground again. Ouch. I got home from there fine, but spent another hour shivering/shaking on the living room floor (2 gels, abt 1/4 cup of peanut butter, gatorade and a gallon of water later, and I'm ok)

Then I went out and got hammered on 2 beers. Whee!

Computer said 3.5 hours riding, but I don't think I actually managed to fix it after the crash. Total time was probably 4.25 hours, so it could be right.

Wait a minute Grasshopper! It took me 3 hours ride time to get from Encanto Park to Baldy Village! Now you started at the base of GMR, made it across to Encanto, up the 39, to East Fork,Lil GMR to GRR then to Baldy Village,Down Baldy Rd,then back to the base of GMR "while bonking" in 3.5 hours?

Dude, I suck!

As soon as you start getting into the little town on East Fork, there is a small trailer park on the left. Right at the end of the park is a small cafe. There is a water spigot out front by the picnic tables. Tha't whee I got water.

Oh! Right in front of the food joint, there is a crosswalk painted on the road. One way you might see it. Only crosswalk in the middle of the little town. Coming down, there was a yellow triangular street sign that said,...you got it, "crosswalk". Not sure if there was one going up.

I think that the computer wasn't working right. Regardless, it was 4.25 door to door. And it really, really hurt me.

Is that your pet rat in your avatar? I <3 pet rats. I think we had 11 before we finally switched to chinchillas, who live longer but aren't so much fun.

Thanks to Beanz for the post & the pics. Looks like a fun ride & a good time (esp. to the beach).

Hey Beanz,
Thanks for the report and pics. It made me home sick. I'm here in Norman, Oklahoma. Been here two weeks already, one more to go. I'm here for work. Getting some training. No I didn't bring my bike. With the wind, rain and tornadoes I don't think I would've ridden always.

Let see more of those pics.

Thanks

Yeah, I'm not really sure. I just hope that if he sees my sister-in-law Margaret, he says hello for me!

Hey, nice report Mr. Beanz. Believe it or not, I read it all. 5 hours on that route is pretty damn good, man! It takes me about 3.5 hrs from Boulder Springs to the village and back. It looks like you'll set a new record on the Breathless Agony!
Is the GMR closed on Saturdays until the end of May? Do you have any more information? I was planning to train there for the "Bear".
Cheers
Jimmy

It's closed CLOSED! There was a group at Baldy Village that rode up Baldy Rd cause the construction guys WOULD NOT let them thru! No record for me Mr. No Helmet, just survival!

Jimmy, I met a guy on Sunday that looks exactly like OCRRick. I thought it was Rick pretending not to know me. He wouldn't be the first!
