SO CAL Weather Alert - SFV Area, May 8th

Guys, in case you've not read in the Griffith Park Night Ride Thread, there is a fire burning in Griffith Park headed for the 5 freeway. If you take that freeway or the 134, you might want to turn on the news or traffic channels in case they close one or both.

KFWB is going ahead with the Dodger game. WTF?! They're supposed to be a "news" station and this definitely qualifies as important news.

I don't think the Dodgers qualify as news unless they're playing the Padres.

When I was driving up to Solvang from Monterey Park for the Solvang Double, they had a fire almost in the same identical area. And that was little over a month ago.

When I left work last night around 4p, I heard on the news that there was a fire in Griffith Park but they assumed it would shortly be under control. Last night, at the last end of my hill training class, around 7:30p, coming down the North side of Newport Coast Drive, I could see the large flume of black smoke towering over the hillside in the Griffith Park area. Got home and saw on the news the fire is now out of control.

Yet another fire started by a cigarette... well 'nuf said about that. You LA riders stay safe and out of the smoke. Hope none of you are affected by the fire. This is such an "urban" fire, so many homes and other structures, including the Zoo nearby. Too sad.

Last week when I was resting (posing, really) at the Griffith Observatory cafe's outdoor patio I noticed a tourist light up a cigarette near the railing overlooking some brush. Literally, within 10 seconds, 2 security guards ran up to this guy and ordered him to immediately put out the cigarette. At the time, I thought to myself, wow, these guys are over-reacting and making such a big deal over a lit cigarette. Now I can see why.

I know it sucks, but smoke for a fire is WAY worse (at least for me). I had an infection in my lungs for about 2 MONTHS a few of years back from one 15 mile ride in the smoke. Not anymore, if there's smoke, I won't ride in it.

Just a thought... I wonder if there will be more of a crackdown on fireworks this summer. My parents live in the tinder-dry hills above Whittier. Although fireworks are illegal in that area, it still doesn't stop idiot people from going to another city to purchase them. Every time I visit them I stare at those wooded hills and imagine them on fire...

I'm with ya...smoke in the air is horrible for me (cue the violins), but I won't ride in smoke at all! I've had a headache all morning and scratchy throat from this crap. This air can't be good for anyone though.

The mayor is on the radio right now. Totals are now at 817 acres and under control, 50% contained. Full containment in 24 hours possible if wind doesn't shift.

Griffith Park will remained closed on Thursday...

Zoo and condor sanctuary are safe...

Yeah, I can't get fire insurance through a normal company up in Topanga. I have to use California Fair Plan.
