Although the sting is quite painful the effect is reported to last only a few minutes and is fatal less often than the honey bee. Because of their stingers, very few animals are able to eat them; one of the few animals that can is the roadrunner. Bullfrogs are known to prey on the Tarantula hawk. Tarantulas hawk wasp's prey can eat them if they lose the battle"

I have just ignored them, and even gone VERY close to check these out.
The wasps completely ignore me. Even when I was watching it 3-4 feet away from the Tarantula it
was feasting on.
I'll show them a little more care, but it won't change my behavior.
No one I know has ever been stung.... ( Knock on wood)...

A few years ago, I came across a stack of cold pill bottles. There were hundreds of them, all with the bottom cut out. Gee, I wonder what they doing with those? Along this same road I used to come across an occasional dog carcass. They were always pit bull carcasses. Hmmm, I wonder what happened?

Once on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, I came across about a 10 mile string of dead poultry chickens (the white ones), and at the end a Purdue truck that was pulled over and the driver was shutting one of the cage doors.

Things I find during my geographical studies: in Upland and Rancho Cuc I find alot of cell phones, in Chino Hills I find kids that yell out the window. When I venture east of the 15 freeway I find wicker baskets full of dead puppies(pit bulls), and kids that throw Big Gulps.

Today I decided to ride down SGRT from Encanto to Seal Beach and back since I haven't done that in 9 months or so. About a mile before the 60, there's quite a commotion going on, paramedics, fire trucks, police, and, or course, spectators. As I get closer, I see the dive team is there, too, and they don't look happy. I then notice the faint outline of the white roof of a car or SUV submerged in the river.
When I came through on the return a couple hours later everything was gone, which leads the optimist in me to believe that there wasn't anyone in the car (I would think the police would still be there doing their investigation) when they recovered it, and they had gotten out safely. Hopefully.

Back in Colorado I saw a freshly dead horse on the side of the road -legs up with a blanket still on his back. No rider in sight, and yes I did stop to see if the rider was under the horse. I've seen dead everything on the side of the road, but for some reason this one made my skin crawl.
More interesting, also in Colorado, I met a very upset bull in the middle of a lonely country road. Alone (me and him) with a choice of turning around for a looong ride back home or go for the pass for a short finish to a long ride. hmmmm... OK, he's just broken out of his field feeling frisky and looking for action but I was something of a Cat 2 track sprinter figuring he's probably soft from the easy life in the field with his cows, so I figure if I play him right, fake to the left then jump to the right I can take this beast. We stare each other down for 15 seconds or so with me fixated on his horns and him thinking I'm lusting after his favorite heifer. His head's down and his breath kicks up dust clouds and I can almost feel the ground shake as he starts hoofing the dirt on the left side of the road while I start inching up straight at him on his side of the road. 10 yards or so away I see his shoulder muscles flex and he makes his move. I jump to the right and put down what has to be the fastest 200 meter sprint I've ever ridden. Sure enough, he tries to spin around to the right, but not expecting the move he's too slow. Missed me by 5 feet. Stupid bull. I think a jersey cow watching all this winked at me as I went by.
I'm sure I've done something more stupid in my life, but I'm having hard time thinking of that would be.

I saw a bobcat on the trail new back bay in Irvine/Newport Beach, (no rabbit in his mouth though)
I've also seen tarantulas on the Aliso Creek paved trail up towards Whiting Ranch.

1) A while back while riding with Mark and Herb I ran over a used condom and got a flat...actually I had to end up throwing the tire away cuz it was so trashed.
2)Yesterday morning while making my way up to the Hollywood Hills via Barham Blvd. I rode past a dead coyote. Smell was pretty horific and there were about a thousand flies on it.

Oh yeah, during my morning commute today, I saw a set of dentures in the middle of the bike lane. Good thing I didn't run it over cause that can possibly cause a flat.
