You can get them from Wallingford and from Clever Cycles in Portland. Beyond that, they're only sold in the UK.

I love REL....
Hey on the Rain Legs looking at them I'm wondering how hard it would be to modify a pair of old ski pants or rain pants into a pair? It looks like a fairly simple concept.

It might not seem like much from day to day, but if you multiply how many times you commute per year, it can really add up. My commute to work is 2 miles each way, but since I work almost 250 days a year, that's nearly 1,000 miles! Plus, every day I sprint across three major intersections and climb one hill. Consistent daily activity is nothing to sneeze at, no matter how small it seems.

I only bike commute about 2 times a week which is 14 miles each time (7 miles one way). Even subtracting the miles from carpooling home with my girlfriend, i've still put on well over 600 miles since February. It may not seem like much but when you compare that to the 1k mles i did for the entire year of 2006 (of purely recreational/training rides), that's quite a bit.

I got side swiped by an older lady, went over her hood and ended up landing in the street bleeding. An on coming car saw it happen, so the driver got out saw I was bleeding but still alive and then got back in their car and drove off. Thank you Los Angeles drivers.

Hi everyone, I just joined this forum to learn more about commuter bikes as I'm going to start riding to work. I probably have the easiest route imaginable, 1/2 mile west to the bike path that runs along the beach, then up the coast, mostly on the bike path, for 4 1/2 miles. Although I have a beach cruiser, I want to get something more efficient for the ride and am thinking of a Trek Soho.

simple bike
good choice of a bike.
there are allot of nice "commuting bike" out on the market these days, probably due to the increase gas price....but there are a few with internal gears, which would be easier if you do more then flat land riding or carrying more stuff.

I commute everyday to downtown LA from Westchester (just north of LAX). I typically ride down Aviation to Imperial (near the 105/405 intersection). From there I take the Commuter Express 438 to work in downtown.
Recently I've had the desire to ride the full distance on a regular basis. So far I've only done it twice--the second time being last night. Last night I rode down Figueroa -> MLK by USC -> Vermont -> Vernon-> Crenshaw -> Florence -> Machester.
My route on Google
Anyone else commute from the LAX-area to downtown? I'm looking for better routes.

I've been commuting for the last 3 years 5 days a week only rain stops me which hasn't been much over the last few years.
Yes I do drive actually have 3 cars, but love riding to work, when I started I was riding 6 mile each way but my company moved closer to were I live so its a short 2 mile ride each way now, but all on major streets, and I actually ride home for lunch every day since I have an hour so I ride 4 times a day to work and home. Then I have my one weekend ride thats around 38 - 50 miles.
I love commuting I use a bike just for it equipped with lights and needed rack and bag, even fog doesn't stop me from my commute but you do need to watch out and ride accordingly.
Not to mention I save about $60 a week in just gas alone.
I must also add that my short ride on a bike is always faster than in a car to get home and to work.

Sorry - bdi - I come the other way, from the San Fernando Valley to Downtown. My commute is about 7 miles (one way) sandwiched between a Red Line trip from North Hollywood to the 7th Street/ Metro station. I've gone on a door to door commute a few times and it is a great ride - through the side streets of Toluca Lake to Forest Lawn Drive in Griffith Park, along the LA River and Riverside Drive and finally crossing the Pasadena St. bridge and taking Broadway through Chinatown. Its about a two hour ride, (24.6 miles), so obviously I don't do it every day.
How safe is your commute? Riding through South Central seems sketchy enough during the day time - how is it at night? That would be my biggest concern if I was planning on commuting along your route on a regular basis. Anyway, thanks for reopening this thread - hopefully some other LA bike commuters from your area will weigh in with their feedback.

I had no issue on my two rides (one at 6-7pm and one at 11pm-12am). On the first ride, one person in a car waiting at a light offered me a toke off a joint. That's the only event I've experienced so far.

I have a pretty nice commute but it's far. I ride from Redondo Beach along the south bay bike path up to Santa Monica. Door to door is about 17 miles each way.
I'm a bit tired when I get to work in the morning and when I get home at night but it's pretty fun. It takes about an hour and 20 minutes which isn't much different than driving.
I ride my mountain bike but I may start riding my road bike instead.

I commute 42 miles round trip everyday. I live in Orange County and have a pretty safe route. I feel sorry for LA people, the streets are old and the people are inpatient.

I used to ride from Redondo Beach to Aviation and Imperial and take the 438. I now take the bike path all the way to Marina Del Rey and take the 437 into downtown. (15 mile bike commute each way)
When I can get up early enough, rather than stopping in Marina Del Rey, I take ballona creek to Culver High, then cut over to Venice. From there to downtown (with some zigs and zags after crenshaw) totalling 29 miles each way.
