Dark Yellow Is An Indication Of Dehydration

Below is an article from Hammer’s web site I let the spousal unit read. Although she does not ride she takes interest in seeing that I get the proper diet and fluids for riding. She always says I don’t drink enough. I try but I am not thirsty that much. Due to this article she is now monitoring my urine color. Not personally, I have to tell her. My urine is mostly yellow and according to the article it needs to be light yellow to clear. I can not recall too many times I had clear urine.

Is your urine clear?

Full article-Menu Mistakes

Excerpt of Menu Mistakes:
How do you know if your hydration is inadequate or excessive? Body weight should be 2% less after a workout lasting 2 hours or longer. From muscle glycogen metabolization during exercise, 2 liters (+/- 0.5 liter) is water weight lost in expiration or perspiration during exercise. If body weight is 1% less or -0- or +1% heavier, over-hydration resulted requiring less fluid intake. If post-exercise body weight is - 3% or greater dehydration as resulted requiring more fluids. Salt stains are indicative of heavy fluid loss and unresolved elevated core body temperatures. Urine color should be light yellow to clear. Dark yellow is an indication of dehydration. No urine voiding for 2 hours or longer may be the first sign of kidney shut down due to progressive dehydration. I should be noted there is an upper heat index limit the body cannot adapt, leading to irresolvable performance-limiting dehydration consequences. This may be avoidable. Heat index adaptation requires at least 10 training day’s exposure before performance potential is reached.

If you're tasting it, you're doing it wrong.

Japanese women used to gargle with baby urine.

I'm pretty sure that practice is now out of fashion.

Haven't ya'll heard of the "three Cs", of urine?

It should be:
Clear.
Constant.
Copious.

Don't remember where I first heard it, but it's stuck with me as a rule of thumb for engaging in strenuous, extended bouts of exercise, especially in dry and/or hot climates.

I must sweat out a lot of fluids though, 'cause I'll often go through a 4 or 6 hour ride, drinking plenty of fluids, without having to stop to pee. Maybe I'm not following my own rule.

And an interesting fact about your stool:

If you eat brocolli and/or spinach on a regular basis, your stool can appear so dark green that you might mistake it for black stool (which is an indicator of blood in the stool and possible cancer). Therefore, if you suddenly notice black stool, ask yourself if you've been eating a lot of greens in the last few days before you freak out. Of course, it is always best to consult a physician if you see sudden changes in your stool, he/she will likely ask you if you've been eating a lot of greens in an attempt to discover the underlying cause before ordering expensive tests on you!

what you urine nazi's need are two types of test strips

A)
one to test for ketones....you need to see zero if you haven't been droping the hamer
and very small amounts if you have been, but only right after hard efforts. drinking any carbo
drink will mop up the ketones and turn them to undetectable

is your body burning fat cells? The presence of elevated levels of ketones in human urine is a primary indicator that the body is in ketosis. Ketosis simply means that the body's stored fat cells are being utilized as a primary fuel source to produce energy. The by products of fat metabolism are ketones. Ketones are not stored by the body and are eliminated as detectable waste products in urine. Therefore, monitoring the level of ketones is presumptive of, and directly correlated to the metabolizing, or burning of stored fat cells to produce energy. Likewise the conclusion can be drawn that the higher the concentration of ketones in urine, the higher is the amount of fat cells metabolized by the body. Ketone test strips are used routinely to help measure the progress of dieters especially those maintaining a low carbohydrate diet. Additionally, ketones are monitored in individuals with Type 1 diabetes. In diabetics, high ketone levels indicate ketoacidosis, a complication of inadequate insulin levels that can lead to diabetic coma. In overall health considerations, high ketone levels are generally an indication of abnormal nutritional conditions, including starvation, fasting, anorexia, high protein or low carbohydrate diets.

so, low if you been working out is OK, and zero any other time.

B) specific gravity. this will tell you how dehydrated you are

basically one big multi-strip in a airtight dessicant container. they expire 6 months after opening.

now for the real deal ?

U want to be a tough guy ? hire Dr Ferrari

U can't afford Dr Ferrari ?

Buy urine test strips
Buy blood glucose monitors
Buy blood lactate monitors
get a watt meter

and find a place to do regular VO2 and metabolic testing

work all this science

and start using them

you can be all U can be

or if you are named RyanF
you can skip all that noise and just jump in a UCI elite race
wink wink nudge nudge know what I mean

(unless you are competing against tiny girls that is...)

about CLEAR

this all depends. most athletes I know will never be clear because they are
working the vitamins.

as was posted earlier, if you are pissing clear you are pissing beer. it really should be
a yellow color but not dark. nuclear yellow is OK. athletes of any sense should be
taking B vitamins at least twice a day if not three times a day. it'll make it yeller

Do those strips normally come in pink boxes? The lady was looking at me funny at the drug store.

Thanks! I thought my toxic yellow is an indication of incompatibility with Cytomax. Nice to know that it's actually normal.

Mine is generally clear to light yellow. The only time it gets too dark is when I drink too much caffeine and later sweat a lot or drink too much caffeine during recovery after sweating a lot.

When I was in the military we were taught to monitor urine color to know how dehydrated we were. According to that training it should be straw colored.

In Tijuana, I limit myself to the little hot dogs wrapped in bacon, which (like other health foods) have an indeterminate effect on urine color.
