From past experience, I can say it's a big enough swap to be worth the road trip.

yeah... exactly.. unless every bike frame intends on being about a few hundred bucks max? what about big ticket items... i guess those wont be for sale?

If it's a shop liquidating old stock you could probably put a deposit and pay for it at the shop. Individuals can always take a check if they trust you. Since it's Sunday no way to get postal money orders/bank cashiers checks.
