San Diego 200KM Brevet - 1/5/08

The route hasn't been posted yet but I hear it's going to be the same as last year. La Jolla, Lake Hodges, Couser and Rice Canyons, Fallbrook to the coast and back south to La Jolla.

If you want to do a double metric, this is an excellent route. This was one of my three favorite rides in 2007.

The entry fee is $10 which gets your card punched, some water and limited SAG.

Wow, it's early in 2008. I'd consider it, except I already have plans on the 5th, not to mention that I'm not in shape for it. :(

jsigone 12-08-07 03:45 PM

I'm in!!!!!

VanceMac 12-08-07 03:51 PM

Frank, how different is a rand from group ride or casual event (like, say, a Solvang century)?

merider1 12-08-07 03:54 PM

Vance, I think it's just self supported and you check in. Not much different than what you've done on bf rides only longer distance. I rode 160 back in March with the guys down to San Diego. It was 160 miles unsupported. It was one of my favorite rides of the year although I was tired when it was over.

I'm not an expert since I've only done one brevet (this one last Jan.) but it is almost unsupported. There is a time limit - 13.5 hours, which is very generous. You won't need lights for this distance. There were, IIRC, two control stations where someone initials your card. The control stations had water but no food. The first station was next to an AM/PM and the second was at a deli. Our group stopped at two other places for snacks or water.

They're going to have a roving SAG car. I don't remember them having that last year.

It's a nice route. There's some climbing at Old Castle Rd, Couser and Rice Canyons and Torrey Pines but it's a scenic route.

The randonneurs are very supportive of their fellow riders and newcomers. You'll see some interesting lighting and saddle setups.

Wow, that sounds like fun! I wonder if I could get in shape in time?

Crash716 12-08-07 11:06 PM

That's 120 miles right?......that's about 45 miles longer than my longest ride...yucky.

mateo44 12-08-07 11:24 PM

Hmmmm. Tempting.

I'm going to do it if it's not raining.

You can park at my house, carpool to the start with me and do a portion of it.

Brandy 01-02-08 01:31 PM

I'm opting out of this one. I'm trying to limit the babysitting strain on Grandma and still haven't dropped my 2008 event schedule on her yet. George will be there and I'm driving down with him in the morning and riding back to Huntington Beach from Doyle Park. Should give me about 80 miles and have me home in time for the kids. :)

So...I'll see you all at the start on Saturday!

Wait, aren't SAG cars against the rules or have I missed something?

efficiency 01-02-08 10:21 PM

Longer than I want to ride. I love the route though.

maddmike 01-03-08 09:55 AM

I was going to but, the forcast looks like pretty heavy rain so, I'm probably out. The one in Malibu on the 19th looks good though.
