My first ride of the new yr...fitness check

I played hookie from work today, slept in some, got on the bike late but still enough time to finish what I want to do. Simple 26 mile ride, out on Palomar. My goal for the yr is climb from the base (taco shop) to the store (summit of south grade) in under 90 minutes.....well I got some work cut out for me. Weather was great, short sleeves on the entire climb up but was packin layers for the decent and I'm glad I did cuz it was freaking COLD up there!!!!!

I hand mental bugs today, I really didn't WANT to climb but I NEED to climb to get faster and I wanted to know the baseline for my goal. Over a dozen times I thought of pointing my wheel downhill but kept on going, I think I could have gone faster, I had goo amount of energy at the top or maybe it was cuz I saw I was 4 turns from the top

and the one that really counts...need to pull 10 minutes out of my ***** somewhere on that climb

Last look before the 25 minute decent to the car

First ride of the yr, whoopping 11 mph average w/ top speed of 47.5

I've been on that road during a road rally afew years ago...

Heck, i've been on most secluded winding roads in SD county all thanks to road rallying for that matter...

Nice pics though.

no motorcycles or LeMans drivers on the mountain today so it was nice having the road to myself for most of the day.

Fun road to drive too, my lil turbo miata LOVES that road

You were distracted (a little) w/ taking a few pics on the way up? K, now put the camera away and work on those 10 minutes.

Seriously though, nice post. Thanks.
Good luck!

I hope to get out there to do this ride sometime in the next few months. What is the length and elevation gain going up? Looks like a nice ride.

Thanks Jason. Looks like a long BRP grade. Looking forward to it.

Keep in mind, there's switchbacks, so that gradientometerthingy is taking the average grade per 1/2 mile. There's sweet little pitches of 12%+ at the switchbacks, and a few random sections of 9-10% near the top.

Yup, it's just as you'd think, BWNC. Very comparable to a long BRP grade. For the crazy steep stuff, though, nearby Mesa Grande offers some interesting climbing. Combine the two, and you've got the foundation of the Pie Ride. And of Pie Lite (which isn't really all that "lite"... the two variants I've done are 80 miles/9000 ft and 85 miles/11000 ft).
