Tour de Palm Springs

Talked my husband into doing The Tour de Palm Springs. We decided we are taking the tandem and doing the 55 miles route. I just hope it isn't windy, I HATE windy! Some friends of ours are going up too but just doing the 25 mile route on their singles. Does anyone else plan on doing the ride?

I do the ride almost every year. I haven't decided about this year yet because I'm nursing a little hamstring injury. I suggest you snag a hotel quickly, if you want to go, because they're usually slim pickings that weekend.

We have already registered for the ride and have made reservations at the Travelodge in Palm Springs. We haven't done an organized ride in years so I'm really looking forward to it.

Gina and I did the very first TDPS years back. They've cut out the difficult portion of the ride since then. Back then, the riders had to climb back up into the hills at about mile 60-80. Now it's pretty much pancake flat after 50. Done it about 4 times but I don't recall it ever being windy other than leaving town near the 10 fwy.

Why not do the 100? It's a good first timer century.

I did it last year, but there was one stretch that I really didn't like. There was a 5 mile downhill stretch, that was the roughest road you can ever imagine ... I lost my light twice, 2 water bottles, and a handful of teeth going through that stretch. I'll probably opt for doing Tour of SB instead.

Since I don't get off the saddle on the tandem, for stop lights etc., my butt gets really sore and I have to ask my husband to stop so I can take a break about every 20 miles or so. I don't care for the thought of being on the saddle for 8 - 9 hours (we are pretty slow on the tandem). If my husband was on his single, he wouldn't hesitate to do the century, doubt if I will ever do one though. I'm happy with what I can do and I'm just along for the ride.

Do you remember the name of the road that was so rough? Did you do the 100 or 55 mile route? It will just help me worry about something else for a month that is totally out of my control.

I wish we could but Gina hasn't been riding well for a while. And no way on the tandem, it kills me when she's not in form!

Plus her father has been pretty sick in the hospital for a while. So training time and mindset isn't there. I did ask her a week ago what she thought and she said nope!

It right after or the last section of Dillon Rd. Right before the 50 mile rest/lunch stop wherre they have the band. I heard many riders complain about loss of control.

I believe the 50 mile riders turn off at the beginning of Dillon Rd so you will not run into that section.

Hi. I'm new to this forum and ride out of the Westchester/Marina area. A group of us from the Shifting Gears club (westside) plans to do the century. Hope to see you guys there.

Generally, it is a little chilly in the morning as you start off, but a light jacket or arm warmers and a sleeveless base layer should get you through the day comfortably while wearing a short sleeved jersey. leg warmers are not necessary, but knickers or knee warmers might help out in the morning.

Make sure the jacket is compact enough to stuff into a jersey pocket, cause you are going to want to take it off at the first rest stop.

The community has taken steps to fix the roads cause Indio was much better last year, but the end of Dillon road may not be fixed yet and it is a little bumpy. However, I have seen pacelines behind a tandem running at close to 45MPH down that hill.

I am trying to do CAM this year and this ride is on my list. Is there anything going on Friday night before the ride? (I'm coming in from San Diego). And do people usually stay for the pasta dinner? Or go out somewhere else to eat?

It's a boring flat ride with crappy scenery and beat up roads. But, yea, I'll probably be there. I usually do the modified century route.
