W2WOWS First Fun Ride of Spring Sunday March 30

Sunday, March 30, 2008 9:00 am

(Sorry guys, this is for the ladies...)

Fun Ride to the Huntington Library:

Presenting-

Smith on Wry: Jack Smith, Columnist for Our Times

Garden of Flowing Fragrance- new Chinese Garden at the Library.

Ride lead by Pat Griffith

Please RSVP to velaville@att.net ( in order to get the group rate, we need 15 people)

Huntington Library opens at 10:30 am on Sunday, March 30. The Group rate is $14 per person.

Our late Los Angeles Times columnist Jack Smith “was one of the most prominent L.A. newspapermen of the 20th century. His archive was donated to The Huntington where it serves as a major resource for research in the history of Los Angeles journalism. The exhibit features approximately 50 items from the collection, including original newspaper columns, drafts and galleys of his books, correspondence and fan mail, photographs, and other materials.” Following the Jack Smith archive exhibit, we will also see the new Chinese Garden: Liu Fang Yuan, the Garden of Flowing Fragrance. “Inspired by the centuries-old Chinese tradition of private gardens designed for scholarly pursuits, Liu Fang Yuan combines the scenic beauty of nature with the expressiveness of literature to give deeper meaning to the landscape. A walk through its paths enriches mind and spirit alike.”

There are two meeting points for this trip:

By carpool: Meet at Mt. Washington Elementary School at 10am to carpool to the Huntington Library

By Bike: Meet at the Heritage Square Gold Line Station parking lot at 9:00 am. The ride is approximately 7 miles, up the Arroyo Seco bike path, then up to Arroyo Blvd. and then California. Join the carpool group at 10:30 am @ the entrance. This is an easy ride, with just one hill, and we will take a leisurely pace.

Bike Mileage: 14 miles round trip approximately- please note that the Allen Street Goldline Metro Station is 1.5 miles north of the Library and is easily reachable by bike for those that would like to ride the Metro back to Highland Park.

Ride: easy and relaxed.

No worries on the gender specific nature of this ride, Alice. I'm sure the boys club sausage fest rides out there are far greater in numbers.

Ladies in skirts get in for free!

Oops, sorry, I was getting the Florentine Gardens nightclub of the mid-80s confused with the Huntington Gardens.

Have fun, you!
