SD Cross riders?
Anyone in San Diego? I'm getting a cross bike with aspirations of racing in the fall and was wondering where some good trails might be to get some experiance on? I'm thinking Peniquestos (sp) might be good, anywhere else? I'm pretty new in SD.
Thanks,
Chris
Thanks,
Chris

What area are you in? I mountain bike frequently, but I'm not entirely sure what trails are "Cyclocross appropriate." I'm getting a single speed cross bike soon, so I suppose I would find out.
Check out one of the best mountain bike sites on the net:

I think Sycamore Canyon (Poway to Santee, CA) could be good if you skip the descent to Martha's.
San Clemente/Rose Canyons could be good give dismount and run across the river bed.
Florida Canyon (Balboa Park) is probably doable as well.

I'm in the Poway/Sabre Springs area, thanks for the advice. I'll check out the site.

If you *want* to ride trails on your cross bike, just to get used to the handling with drop bars and skinny tires, then do so, especially if you don't already have mountain bike experience. However, if you already have mountain bike experience, and can handle a bike in the dirt, your best bet is to just focus your training, leading up to cross season, on short, hard efforts, with some running mixed in.
The most important skills for racing are going to be your mounts/dismounts. You can practice those in any nearby park with grass or dirt and a good hill for run-ups.

I don't live in San Diego so I can't help you out with trails. Maybe get in touch with Celo Pacific. They have a lot of guys who race 'cross.
I just take my 'cross bike out on the trails where people go mountain biking. That's really the only way to find out which trails are fun on a 'cross bike and which ones aren't. I don't think that I've ridden my mountain bike for a couple of years now.

I don't ride a cross bike but i mt bike a lot you might want to try lake hodges the trails are very tame and smooth so i assume that they are perfect for a cross bike.
