Seeking Yucaipa Knowledge ...
I'm thinking about a ride out of central Redlands through Yucaipa, up to the Mill Creek Ranger Station and back. I have a couple of questions, and I wonder if anyone here might know the answers ...
1) When you're leaving Redlands on Sand Canyon Road, how tough is the climb up to Crafton Hills College? (Doesn't look that tough on a topo map.)
2) Once I climb up that hill and I'm in front of Crafton Hills College on Sand Canyon Road, what's the best way through Yucaipa from that point to the Mill Creek Ranger Station? It looks like Yucaipa Blvd.>>Oak Glen>>Bryant is the most direct route. Any stretches that might be hazardous along that route for a road cyclist?
Any help much appreciated. Thanks.

2: Take a left on Chapman Heights Rd., the first light past the east entrance to Crafton Hills College. This road is nice and wide with a bike lane, and way less traffic than Yucaipa Blvd.
Follow Chapman Heights Rd. until you come to a light at Oak Glen Road, and make a left. If you don't want to ride the road, there's a bike-path, paralleling the sidewalk up Oak Glen Road. It ends at the top of the hill by Yucaipa Regional Park, and you'll have to get back on the road. Oak Glen will intersect Bryant, where you'll want to make a left, which will lead you out to the Ranger Station on Hwy 38.
They're doing construction on the section of Hwy. 38, just east of the ranger station, so that short section is kinda sketchy right now. No shoulder, and a very narrow lane, in the direction you'll be traveling. Going the other direction it's not as bad, but they have k-rails set up in the westbound lane, so just be prepared for that. You'll likely have to ride near the center of the lane to get through there safely, but it's only about 1/4 mi. before it opens back up.
Have a good ride.
