what do you wear?

I was just wondering what some of you out there wear when you go riding?

Personally, I wear a pair of Under Armor type underwear, antimicrobial, stretchy for support and to minimize/eliminate chaffing, a pair of shorts (polyester), and some kind of Under Armor wicking shirt.

I have a camelbackpak that I use to carry all the important stuff to and from work.

It seems to be working quite well for me...I've been doing this for 3 weeks now and I have yet to feel any pain or discomfort or anything else bad.

anyone else?

any suggestions?

Usually plain cycling jersey and black lycra shorts.
Baselayers/arm/knee warmers added during cooler months.

swimmer88 06-26-08 11:57 AM

usually just a cycling jersey with black cycling shorts (performance bike elites are soo comfortable). sometimes i'll wear an baselayer to stay cool. occasionally i'll wear a sleeveless jersey to help minimize tan lines on my arms.

There was a time I wouldn't wear a jersey but I always rode bike shorts, the best I could afford. Your nether regions will thank you for that. I now also wear cycling jerseys because, frankly, they are made for cycling. They wick away mositure, dry quickly and the design is built not to interfere with cycling.

When I mountain bike, I generally wear MTB shorts although at times I also wear regular cycling shorts instead. Depending on the terrain the extra nylon shell protects me from brush and brambles. Now on trail, I will wear a "sports" tshirt, something light weight and moisture wicking, as well as jerseys specifcally designed for mountain biking.

Wear what is comfortable, and what you can afford. Just know, there is a purpose to the design of cycling clothes, especially the shorts. If nothing else, get some good shorts. Also I like cycling socks. They mositure wick... your feet will also thank you later.

Team gear. At least I did when I rode.

You're doing it wrong

They do have the padded underwear and those will work under regular shorts, just don't put regular underwear under the lycra shorts. That is a serious fashion faux pau...

Generally I wear the cycling apparel specific to the bike style I am riding, bubt I have been known to wear lycra shorts on the MTB and baggy shorts on the road bike...

Wear what you like. If it's comfortable and it's working for you, then you're doing it right. Have some fun.

I do that often and it works.

Outrageous advice. There are rules, you know.

Actually it sounds like what you are doing is fine. Bicycle shorts are more comfortable because they don't chafe and they have padding. You've taken care of the chafing issue, and if you are comfortable on the rides you do, you don't need the padding.

I love to ride in my Levi 501 jean cutoffs, and a tight T shirt, with my camel cigs rolled up in the sleeve. On hot days I wear a tight wifebeater tank top, that way I can show off my tats

Rules...HAHAHAHAHA!!! Rules are for Freds.

"There's no crying in cycling..." Ted Hanks

I 'member the time I cruised a triple cranked, fully bagged 30lb.+ bomber in walking shorts and lace up tennis shoes on platform pedals with 500 gram rims wrapped with 32's. Topped with a Bell that was scripted with "Test Helmet". Mid 80's Windmill Century. Rode the entire thing by myself, sub 6, even though I said hello to each and every SR clad Ciocc, DeRosa & Casati that I passed. Nary a nod back. I was the proverbial sheep cloth.

Its not that I'm COMPLETELY opposed to riding in spandex shorts. To be completely honest, I don't know that I could ride thru the hood with the ease that I do now if I rode thru in some nice bike shorts. I try to stay low key. I want to not paint myself as a target when riding thru...y'know? hehe...

and the gear that I have now is quite comfy, and supports me very nicely. especially the underwear that I bought from Target...their the Under Armor knock off type...like I said, they both support and prevent chaffing.

Granted, I only ride between 10-20 miles either way, but my chonees, shorts, and shirts have kept me cool and comfortable till now.

I only have one bike, right now, so I don't think I need different types of gear for riding...for now.

bibs and a jersey.

efficiency 06-26-08 07:59 PM

Depends on what I'm doing. For training rides and racing, I wear plain shorts and plain jersey (I'm "unattached"). If I'm running errands or doing short transport type rides, whatever I got on already works.

Nachoman 06-26-08 09:33 PM

Training rides I wear the whole getup. But for my commute it doesn't matter what I wear (even underwear!).
