Escape from the Orange Curtain San Diego Century, 7/12

As yet another ominous sign of the end of days, M.E. has agreed to overcome numerous cosmic forces, superstitions, and phobias to actually drive south of the Orange Curtain to attend a San Diego century.

I expect this paradigm shifting event to tear the Orange Curtain asunder and allow other OC and El-ay prisoners to break free of their shackles and join us in enjoying what is sure to be a fun ride.

When: Saturday July 12. Roll at 8:00AM
Where: Start from my house in La Jolla
The Route: The route is basically two loops. The first goes North into Rancho Santa Fe and back to La Jolla along the coast - this is more or less the SDBC "B" ride. About 50 miles. The second loop goes through La Jolla, likely with a climb up Mt Soledad, and then goes around San Diego Bay, including a ferry crossing from Coronado to Downtown SD. Another 50 miles. There will be something less than 4000 ft of climbing, almost all of which will be in the 1st half of the ride. Here is the Bikely Map with cue sheet. It says 106 miles but it's more like 104 since we will not actually be riding our bikes across San Diego Bay. We did this ride last August and it was very successful, notwithstanding Grumpy Pig's unfortunate confrontation with a railroad track (he lost).

https://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/61728

If there are those who only want to ride the 2nd half, they can meet us at a) the corner of North Torrey Pines and La Jolla Shores Dr if they want to do Mt Soledad, or wimpier still b) at the Mission Bay Visitor's Center on Mission Bay Drive.

Here are the addresses for option a) Gas Station/Starbucks; and b) Mission Bay Visitors Center

If you go for option A I suggest that you park at my house and ride down to the meeting point.

After Ride: BBQ at Chez Indolent.

I will have a couple of couches available if anyone wants to come down Friday night rather than driving early on Saturday morning. Let me know if you want to do that.

Sounds fun. I'll be moving down there in a few weeks (off of Gilman dr.) and I'm definitely down. Sounds like a blast.

I may be able to pull this off and break free!! Sounds fun. Add me to the tentative list with CJ for now and I'll confirm as we get closer.

Is anyone driving down from the Pasadena/glendale area? That's a really long drive to do a century. Still need to figure out if I'm racing or not that weekend, but if not will definitely try to get down.

I'm going to drive down from Silverlake and have room for one more.

Oh, and add me to the list. Looks like a fun route.

I rode the East grade of Palomar today and have done a solo 75 mile ride, so I think I am almost ready... Any input/encouragement is greatly appreciated!!

Me too. I started around 11 or 12. I only saw one cyclist I didn't know; on the drive up 76 I saw a guy wearing glasses coming down east of the taco shop.

I'm in for the century. Chez Indolent is wonderful.

In. Probably. Most likely. Better put me on the maybe list, but I'm really, really going to try.

Sounds like a good day to ride in Santa Monica without the fear of being doored.

Shame that you can't make it. The pace will probably be a little too high for you anyways.

Maybe next time.

I'm in pretty good shape, but I just started riding seriously and I don't know that my endurance is that high right now.

I'm in for at least the first half, but I'll have to see if I'm up for the second half...I still got a couple weeks to work up to it...

...yeah, and as long as I'm not under way, I'm in for at least the first half.

...as long as you guys don't mind a noob/sailor/dogofthegovernment coming along.

If you're not up for the full ride go for the 2nd half so you get the food at the end.
