Wild times on the Santa Ana River Trail

Yesterday afternoon (7/20/08) I did a ride from Imperial Hwy down to the beach on the SART. Around mile 6 or so on the way down I saw a large group of kids riding the other way on the other side of the river. They were in single file and yelling and even falling down. I could see that they were kids, but had no idea what they were doing.

On the way back near mile 10, I saw a woman with here bike laying sideways across the path. Right next to it was a 24 can box of Coors Light. There were empty cans all over the place. I guessed that she had fallen and dropped a bunch of cans she was recycling. As I went further up the path I saw more and more empty cans on and beside the trail. I also noticed a few guys peeing on the side. When I got to the underpass at the northeast end of the golf course I could see a huge group of kids (18-20 yrs?) on the other side. As I came out of the tunnel there was a group of maybe 80 people stopped on the bike path. The volume of noise was incredible. As I tried to weave my way through the bikes I had to get off and walk, with all sorts of guys yelling unintelligible things at me. There were a few girls mixed in the group and one of them said "sorry" to me. I said, "Hey, it looks like a good time to me."

As I rode further back up the trail I passed smaller and smaller groups of these riders. They would scream at each other to get out of the way as I came up on them. Of course none of them actually stopped weaving and moved out of the way. I was really amused.

Anyone know what the heck was going on?

Eric

My Girlfriend and myself rode our tandem down to the beach. We started our ride at 8.30, getting on the trail at Yorba Linda Blvd. We passed a few groups going down, they were riding single file in a safe manner. On our way back we saw a few huge groups of kids. It looked like a organized church ride. Kids at 12 years old have no concept of keeping in a single file pace line. They were all over the trail, I had to yell to avoid hitting them head on under the underpasses. I've been riding the SART everyday to work for 13 years. I've seen about everything you can imagine.

There was a pretty big chaotic group last week as well. My buddy crashed into one of them when they couldn't figure out or decide which way they were going to move (they did both). No injury - just some misalignment and a flat on his part. I ended up passing them four times (once going down, turn around when buddy called and thought he might need the car - spare tube had too short a stem, once more when he fixed it, and then once more on the way back. )

Hope it doesn't become normal for SART.

I saw the group at about 2-2:30 pm. Looked to be about a hundred kids, late teens. One was on a motorized beach cruiser down in the riverbed. Very loud group, glad they were on the West side of the trail when we rode by.:thumb:

I've never seen anything like this on the San Gabriel River Trail, but I'll keep an eye out...

Maybe it's a new thing...

School will start soon, but not to soon for me. Kids with time on their hands no doubt.

Nope, seen it for the last few years. It's just that SART is so much nicer than SGRT but you won't come out to play with us!;)

I belong to an email group where one of the big topics is the countdown until Labor Day Weekend. I think we collectively all hate summer.
