ACH/Mt Wilson

My group is planning to climb ACH this Sun(Aug 10). We're form Orange county & would like to know where would be a good place to park, possibly with a few miles of warm up before the climb.
We've also heard of swarms of mosquitoes up there.
Would appreciate any advice, thanks!

You can park at the Rose Bowl. That will give you about 3-4 miles of warm up. I don't really know where others park, cause I just usually leave from home. That gives me about 13 miles of warm up. I know Vertical Bob, parks at Red Box and climbs to way up there. Which isn't bad, considering lower mountain traffic can be sketchy at times. But you will need a day pass for your car.

You can park along the lower part of AC near the 210, or on the residential streets. There is also a park before the first turn, you can park there for free. Sunday is the big day for motorcycles up there!

I always leave my car near the park at Foothill and La Canada - just park on the street.

Using that spot, the climbing starts immediately - if you want a few miles for warm up, then the Rose Bowl could be a good bet. Also - the Griffith Park Zoo could be worth considering.

I've never seen swarms of mosquitos, but there were a lot of flies up there once this year. (haven't seen them since.)

Another option is the street in front of Descanso Gardens. Never seen mosquitos on that ride.

Descanso Gardens is good, it'll give you a few minutes warmup before you start climbing.

Thank you very much for the info! We might consider Descanso Gardens, then probably just do a few miles of warm up around the vicinity before going to ACH.

There are often swarm of knats in the mountains this time of year. Not so much on AC but anytime you get into the trees like the Wilson road or any of the side roads. Last month I rode up to Mt Gleason off of Angeles Forest and they were thick. A liberal dose of Deet seems to help some ,and they don't bite, but they can be very annoying buzzing around your head.

Rode to Clear Creek before work today. 11am - Noon, clear sky conditions, inversion about 3000ft. temps mid to upper 90's, slight breeze, little traffic, one dead snake at marker 31.00, one CHP Crown Vic at the Clear Creek Visitor parking. Road has recently been "brushed", not as much debris at the edges, though there is some growth that pokes out.

ACH Ride Sunday

Erwin,

Are you still planning your ride for sunday up ACH?

We have been starting at Red Box lately.

What time are you leaving?
How many riders?

TX,
Eric

Hi!

My group will start down at Descanso Gardens at 7AM. I'm not yet sure if we would still do a few minutes of warm up along Verdugo-Foothill, we're slow starters! There might be around 8 of us and we'd be on our River Velo jersey. Hope to see you there.

Thanks,
Erwin

as of today/ Friday PM, bugs are out Newcomb's and above (least they were at 6PM ish..

Not horrific. No deet. But mid-day with less breeze? Maybe worse..
