Why Do Riders Do This? It's A Challenge, Right?

I had fun with it but don't want any hurt feelings. On Sunday's ride, we are gaining on a couple of riders. One guy in full kit and one on a fixie. Obviously giving a good effort. Fixie guy kept falling off. Full kit dude would slow up once in a while so the fixie guy could catch back on.

We're just holding our pace but still gaining. Maybe 6 or 7 mile later we catch them. We keep our pace as we roll by. The full kit guys shouts,"choo-choo!" then they both hop on the Beaner Train. Somewhat of a headwind on the last mile to the coast. The guys ride our wheels for a half mile or so then sprint around. I can see them look back to see if we are gaining.

Now I don't understand what kind of sense that makes. Riders catch you from 1/2 a mile behind, so you jump on, then sprint around after you get a rest. Now would that prove that they are stronger riders? I think not, so why do it when you know you've already got caught?

Now me, I think of the fun and games so we chase them down. Not too tough after they sit in the wind for a bit!.... We roll by so the full kit dude hops on again but the fixie dude totally gets dropped bigtime! Now I have no problem with it, I'm fun! But I just don't want anyone saying later on,"well we didn't know we were racing"....Yeah ok, you knew so don't get butthurt!

If you do this to passing riders, ,you know it's on, right**********

when i was a stupid kid with a car street racing, that's called the loser fly-by. When it's fairly obvious that you've won, already off the gas and hitting the brakes, he speeds up again to pass you

Sometimes there are people who don't know you as well as we do...

You should have gapped them when you overtook them the first time.

I didn't start out competing with them. I was just holding a good pace. Plus I had Gina and Mad_One with me. I didn't decide to put it on till they sprinted around with "the look"!

If I had been competing with them, we could have caught them 5 miles back!

Even when you don't think it's a race, it's a race.

You know, I believe it! But whenever I ride up on another rider, I make sure not to show any aggression. Usually they try to sprint away or whatever. Sometimes they get away, sometimes they don't! It's all fun to me.

But if you beat someone down, then it's Oh, "I didn't know we were racing!". Couple of guys did the same thing a couple of years ago. I went along for the fun of it as I was alone. After one guy was dropped, he said, "my friend must be sick cause he's a very strong rider and would usually beat you" right before I dropped him!

I had never met the guy before in my life, He didn't know my abilities back then. Like I've said before, "I have never outridden anyone that was healthy"!:roflma2:

I'm sorry, but do I understand this to mean that there are morons out on the SART who think they're "racing"? Oh, I love those guys... but I just don't care enough to do anything with them. You pass me, you pass me. Not going to hurt my ego or pocketbook. I ride for fun, not money and last I checked, there is no money to be found on the SART.

Trust me, Beanz... if you ever pass me on the SART I'll just let you go and keep riding whatever piddly pace it is that I'm riding that day (probably 17mph). One thing I most certainly won't do is take it as an afront to my manhood and then feel the need to race you and your posse. Of course, that'd mean that I'd need to actually be on the same side of the SART as you. I always see you guys heading the opposite direction from me.

So is hollering "choo choo" a roadie thing or what? That's a new one on me.

(On hills, I have been known to make locomotive-like sounds, though.)

Full kit? Why do people feel the need to mention this? Especially in a dorogotory manner? What does that even mean, really?

Well, really depends on what our idea of fun is! Although you are riding just about the same pace we are riding, I like too push every once in a while. Some people like riding to watch birds, some for a workout and some for a little friendly competition. Just beause you are riding for 'FUN', doesn't mean we aren't getting our share!

I find it strange, and 'THE' reason for this thread, is that on any ride, and most of the forum rides I've been on, 90% of the riders ride ina manner of competing. Whether they admit it or not. I've seen very few that DO NOT give the impression that they are not competing. That includesthe SART,SGRT and GMR rides that I've attended!

I'm not sure why someone would take it as a blow to their manhood, I see cycling as a sport, along with fun and games!

Dorogotory? Did I also use fixie in a dorogotroy manner? Hey sorry man, I will change it to "some dude on a Specialized' if you like!...But then someone might complain about that!

Full kit means a matching outfit, shorts and jersey, usually with logos and sponsors printed on the duds.

I've heard it form maybe 3 other riders in the last couple of years. I don't know, is it a good thing or a bad thing?

SART rhymes with fart for a reason. Boring Regardless I'm going to ride it in two weeks from Green River. Hopefully I will run into King Beanz and jump on the Upland Express.

I can't figure out what to do with some situations like this on PCH, especially, in the afternoons.

I'm out there hammering my best because I've got a setting sun and I'm dialed in for a workout. Some guys I see all the time and, some nites I buzz by them, some nites they return the favor....WHO CARES? We're all after a workout before it's dark. It's a busy place to ride - keep your ego together. Most guys do out there.

However, it's almost always a BIG DEAL if you're doing the Laguna Canyon Road climb out to Irvine. Not so many riders and someone always seems to get their nose bent if I happen to pass them. I DON'T CARE about this stuff - why do others? I'm 60 years old for crissakes - do I even remotely look like a 'Lance' wannabe? I'll take a 'recovery ride' out there too - don't care at all what speed I'm doing.

I passed a guy two weeks ago near the top of the climb - I didn't know the guy and he looked to be focusing on his workout - so I don't wave or say anything. 5 Miles later.....I pull up to the light at the 73 intersection and same guy pulls up behind me. I turn, say "how it's going" and smile - he ignores me, barrells away like he's doing a TT now. Nice. Smooth.....

There's a older guy some may know from the Newp area who rides with an aero bar set-up, shirt-less, and very, very fast. He passes me doing 25-27 MPH around the back bay or out in Irvine AND, he always gives me the 'hey, what's up man...yadda, yadda" as he flys by me. That's cool. He blows my doors off 2-3x a week and always gives you the friendly talk. It's a nice vibe. We all dig riding...relax with the attitude thing.

I've seen the threads here about people getting the advice to not be so "into yourself" if you wave/smile/say hi to someone and, they don't reply. My take is different. I've surfed around here a lot longer than I've ridden but, I think the same thing applies: MAKE FRIENDS WITH THE LOCALS, BRA'...keep it mellow....they may have a nice looking sister or, worse, some gnarly friends you may not want to meet.

That's how I play it.

I'm hoping others pick up on the idea that my thread is about friendly competition with those that are looking for it!

Not racing by others that are doing theirown thing!....Heck, I'm the first to smile and wave at the others!

But, if I see a fast guy fly up from miles behind me, then passes me like I'm standing still, I won't take his wheel then try to outsprint him after I recover. That's silly. He's blowing by me for a reason, like maybe he's faster!

FWIW, I usually just keep a good pace for Gina and only race with other guys when they invite me!

....And some of them old guys are fast Obie! And yes,you do look like Lance!

I wanted to say the same thing but had trouble counting out the proper amount of little star thingies!

Seriously, she's the one that has been asking for increased mileage. We've been doing 50-60 rather than our usual 40 at her request. On Sunday's ride, Mad_One left on the return section early. Whether he was worried about Gina dropping him, not sure cause he won't say!

She and I rode back side by side. A couple of times I felt really tired and thought she cold drop me if she wanted. But in all fairness, I didn't eat my Clifbar! And she's agreed to ride GMR! Hopefully this weekend if it aint 100 plus! If I get her inot climbing, she'll be a terror!

Soon she'll be riding 100 miles and we'll see each other more often on century rides.

When are you two heading up GMR?

Well, we almost went this past Saturday. Watching the forecast, temp was expected to be at 97 degrees. So we pulled out cause she suffers bigtime in the heat. She almost made it on one of the forum rides (16 miles up), well twice, but it got too hot and a bee stung me on th neck so we turned back. On a cool day, she has a much better chance.

I almost posted a snail pace ride but figured all the riders that talk about trying GMR for the first time wouldn't show anyway. So if it's OCRRick and the other fast guys, we'd be geting to the village while they were loading their bikes.

Good thing I didn't post cause it was too hot! I figure a 7 am start would be good but not sure at our speed!

I think she could and have talked about it. But she's one of those "why?" riders. She thinks you guys are a lil too crazy!..Gotta give 'J' a lot of credit for the doubles!
