Camp Pendleton still open for bikes?
I am planning on riding from San Diego to Glendale in order to join my wife and kids at my sister-in-laws house for Thanksgiving. I haven't ridden North in a LONG time . . . last time I did it, we rode through Pendleton to the 1. Is that still a doable route, or have they closed it down for fear of bicycle riding terrorists?
Thanks in advance for you responses!

Camp Pendelton was closed for a few years after 9/11, but it has been open for a couple of years now. Bring photo ID.

Went through there in August. Only restriction was you had to go through before 3:00 pm. If you miss the cutoff the only alternative is to jump on the I-5 until you are clear of the camp.

The 5 is not that bad either... nice long downhill going north...
but make sure you exit the freeway at the rest stop, go through the rest stop and enter the freeway again... then get off at Las Pulgas, turn right, then left and onto the decrepit runway there...

Best bet any time of year is to call the PIO/Community relations office. All military bases have them, and they are pretty helpful. They can tell you if the road will be closed on a certain day/week, and what the restrictions are for riding on the base. As I found out years ago (pre-9-11) they were having 'war games' on the beach one weekend and I didn't find out until I got there and the access road was closed!. I know they used to require you to wear a reflective vest while riding through the base, too. Hope its open and have fun!
Here's the base's website:
