Anyone doing this midnight express ride?

No, not critical mass. A ride that starts at midnight at Union Station and climbs through the Angeles forest and ends in Acton for breakfast. I signed up, sounds cool (and wickedly cold). It's a fundraiser for LA Bike Coalition, and it's a weird one, so I'm in. Any other takers?

Be careful out there, esp Angeles Forest at night. Bring a can of Bear spray...for dangerous animals (and humans). And try to keep everyone together as much as possible. And it's still fire season.

No, the Arroyo Seco is basically along the 110 into Pasadena and up to JPL.

huh - I've never ridden that stretch, but I can't see using "surreal" to describe a garden-variety MUP running between a drainage ditch and a freeway. Unless they are referring to the sketchy neighborhoods along there...

It's not an MUP and it's not a drainage ditch.

Well, there are some paved parts of the river, so I guess it's a drainage ditch, but the area is a decent wildlife habitat and recreation area.

Honestly I don't know the route either. Couldn't find a map on the site. The thing that I don't get is scheduling this ride in November. It would be a perfect ride for the summer when those canyons are almost too hot to ride in the daytime anyway! Oh well, I'm always up for anything. Looking forward to it actually.

I know most of the route, and it's mostly great streets during the day.

I'm probably in, but I have family coming from out of state and they might be trying to drag me up to the bay area. The part in the forest will probably be beautiful.

Hi,

Sounds glorious and dangerous. I'll pass but thanks for the info. I'll be very interested to hear how it goes.

I'll try to post a decent ride report. What do I do to prep for an overnighter, get up super early or stay up super late in the days leading up to it? I figure I'll be too cold and freaked out to get sleepy on the bike... Bears! Fires! Wildebeasts!

depends on how well you climb...

I'd just sleep a little late in the morning and not worry about it-- it could be a four or so hour ride at a moderate pace, then you have a couple hours to snack/nap in palmdale before catching the train home. Or just wait til dawn and start riding, but I'd worry more about dawn commute traffic (even on a sunday) than the midnight to 4am traffic.
