Just did this ride yesterday - there are some pretty cool stretches in there. The climbing, according to my Garmin GPS was 6450 ft. The freeway stretches are easy and quick too. For those who want to visualize it, you can download the Google Earth kmz file of the route:

Cool. I didn't particularly like the flat stretch in Mira Mesa but the climbs are better than the 56 bike lane. My altimeter was somewhere along 6k as well but during my ride it started really cold and ended up really hot so I couldn't trust it. I thought about adding some more little climbs but I think it's not a bad 80 miles or so considering the area.

They nearly did. Ok so it was my fault I forgot about it, but really, closing off the roads and killing my Sunday ride did not a happy kitty make. Actually what I found odd was that the road closure heading south was halfway between O'side and C'bad in the middle of the lagoon crossing. Ya. City planning at it's finest.

Last year there was a sign there that said "Closed - Church Traffic Only". I told the volunteer and the police officer stationed there that I was going to St. Patrick's. He let me go and I rode to just south of Fidels where another cop ran across the street to intercept me and yell at me. I apologized and told him that the other officer had let me go because I was on my way to church. He said, "He must have thought you said St. Michaels (near the ANA). I apologized again and offered to take a side street to Tamarack. He agreed and I made it to the ride on time.

I'm going to burn in Hell.

The route used to go down Grand in downtown Carlsbad but the store owners complained about losing business so they changed the route to do a U-turn at the lagoon crossing.

OK, I'm in (weather permitting). I posted earlier on the "other" forum but I see all the action is here.
If there is a slight chance of rain, don't wait for me.

Better now than waiting for the train, which I had to do the first time I ran it. Only my second marathon, it was the difference between under 4 hours and 4:01 something.

This was supposedly the last year for the Carlsbad Marathon. Next year they are partnering with Encinitas and Solana Beach and the route will go through all three cities along 101. The proposed name for the new race is "Beach Cities Marathon".

They are still in the planning stages to see if the new course will work. I hope so, it would be cool to have the whole thing along the ocean instead of doing the inland detour along Palomar Airport Road.

Is this going to be a cruise or a hammer fest. I've been lagging lately so I'm kind of slow in my lazy winter fatness right now. Of course if I start to crap out I can always break off an head for home (5 miles away) when we hit Del Dios Hwy.

I hadn't heard that. That would be a nice course. The inland part was always such a boring part of the race. I doubt it will lure me into another marathon though. 35 or so is enough for these knees

Hammer? I certainly hope not. I believe the first post said it is a no-drop ride, which is what I'm counting on.

Hmmm, bad knees ... you need to come over to the dark side and take up racewalking! (I am an instructor BTW). Just did 2 marathons in 2 weeks, no knee issues whatsoever.

I'm hoping this will be a good recovery ride from my Saturday mix, so slow is good for me.

My hope for the ride would be to have a nice even pace along the flats, try to keep everyone together. Once we get to the climbs, you can decide how hard you want to ride. We will have regroups at the top of each climb, so it's no biggie for those who want to 'let it all out' during the climbs.

Are there any places along the route where we can stop to refill water? It is a long, tough ride – I don’t think I can do it on 2 water bottles.

All over the place. Don't worry too much, thought there will be few stretches when you'll want to be filled up.

Oh yeah - count me in as a maybe.

If it's raining or a possibility of rain, are we still on?

It depends on how much rain really. Current forecast calls for partly cloudy on Sunday as all the rain should pass by Saturday evening. That being said, I have filled my rain riding requirement for this year, so if it calls for persistent showers, then the ride will be cancel. I'll keep a watch on weather and give final notice on Saturday night. At that point, everyone can decide what they want to do.

There will be alot of opportunity to stop if anyone needs to fill-up or use the restroom after Calle Cristobal.

Is it true that Jimmy won't ride if he walks outside and sees his neighbor watering the lawn?

Usually it is true. But this time I'm going to ride if the forecast holds up as it is at the moment. With my luck, 20% chance of rain will end up being 100% pure rain but what the heck... I need some quality miles and judging from the profile, Ian has put together a killer route. I don't want to miss it.
