New to fixed riding, looking for advice...
 

What's up everyone, I'm new on this forum and just looking for some advice on riding fixed. (on the streets) I rode road bikes for years and love the idea of fixed riding. Just ordered a Bianchi Pista steel and planing to put a front brake on it. I've been checking out others opinions on Fixie's and collected lots of useful information. I need advice what sort of pedals I should get since I've seen most fixies ride clipless, any thoughts or ideas? Plus any organized rides in the North Hollywood area...?

Since you're here . . . I use Crank Bros Egg Beater pedals 'cause there a four places you can clip in on each pedal. Lots easier to hit one with your foot when it's a moving target!

I run shimano spd-sl on mine, since it's what I use on my road bike.

What kind of riding are you going to do? I have a fixed gear, but only have it for fun, and never really go out too long on it. If (like me) you mainly will do short runs to friends houses/around the city, get toe clips. If you will use it for hours without a dismount, go clipless. IMO there is nothing more obnoxious than the cyclist who runs clipless for a 1 mile trip to the grocery store. If you are riding it somewhere where you will be off the bike for an extended period of time, toe clips make much more sense.

And don't worry about what 'most fixies ride'. It is pretty lame to do something just because you want to fit into a crowd.

I ride my fixed gear regularly and often ride into Griffith Park, up to the observatory, pose for a few minutes, then go back down the other side for a nice loop back to my home in Echo Park.
As far as pedals, I use eggbeaters and walkable touring type shoes on most my bikes.

nope. That is the most obnoxious thing out there. Trust me, I know these things. :D

I don't like my fixie to limit my footwear choices so I went with MKS GR9 toe clipped platform. That way I can ride in what I'm wearing instead of having to dress up special for my bike. A fixie should make life simpler, not more complicated.

I always take my coffee black, no matter what, even while I'm wearing clipless shoes.

Same combo here, and same philosophy.
The GR9 pedals are quite nice, and the fixed gear is the perfect machine to just pick up and ride -- no hassle, no special equipment -- pure riding.

I ride with MKS touring Short pedals and MKS half clips

Also I use a pair of SOLE heat molded inserts in my sneakers to give me a little more stiffness and support, they are not nearly as hard in the toe box as I was looking for but they def. help some
