Lucky he didn't go head-on into the car or t-boned and it didn't look like the car was going that fast to stop in that short of a distance. Did do a nice save though and he was unclipped well before the turn...so something either happened further up the hill or his speed was too fast/had a vibration or a tire going down. Went straight to the side of the road. I would be checking my heart rate and chilling for awhile after that.

Had he hit a motorcycle odds are both would have crashed. He was riding way over his head.

Vid just worked for me. I won't jump to conclusions, so I'll add that that's about what my uncle's crash looked like when he had a blowout while rounding a corner on Westlake Blvd. Looking back, he remarked how mucky he was to not have a car coming the other way, but his accident could not have been avoided even if he was going 10 mph.

I'm hoping that's what happened to this guy. Otherwise, he is an idiot.

Read the blog...
Following Toby (who I met at the lookout point after this happened) on his Ducati up The Snake (aka, Mulholland Highway) just above The Rock Store when a cyclist comes down the hill too fast and blows the turn. Their rear tires just touch. Luckily everyone got away without incident.

Shot from my '07 VW GTI with a Sony DCR-SR85, CruiseCam camera mount, and wide-angle lens

Someone didn't judge that corner very well...I've done that going down the switchbacks over here the second time I went down them. I just wasn't used to really leaning into the corners and ended up going into the other side of the road. Luckily there wasn't any cars coming up.

Must have been the same guy that passed me going down Stunt today in the wrong lane on a blind corner. What's wrong with these people, do they have a death wish? Just don't take an innocent person too.

I'm sure his butt puckered up exiting that corner, seeing a motorcycle, clear it then stare down a car's windshield.... WOW

Overcooking a corner on an unfamiliar winding road is a mistake you make only once, luckily.

I'm amazed he stayed upright! Wonder what caused him to unclip the inside foot? I don't recognize that turn, but if it's one of the long sweeping ones, he may have been overcooked well before then and unclipped in anticipation of something bad about to happen. Perhaps he heard the bikes and car coming. I'm just glad my Campy Veloce brakes do their job above and beyond the call of duty. Saved my arse quite a few times.

This is why I don't concern myself with speed going downhill. Its just way too easy to make that mistake. Even on hills I know that could happen if you're going too fast downhill.
